About Me

I'm an anthropologist who studies social change, especially religious change. I'm interested in post-socialist countries. I'm currently conducting research in Kyrgyzstan and will be traveling frequently throughout Central Asia.

I'm a husband and a father. I frequently travel with my partner, Ashley, and kids (currently 3 and 1). Ashley and I love to travel with the kids. Well, travel may be putting it lightly. We love to explore with our kids. We backpack, cycle, and live abroad with kids. Kids just add to the adventure.

We love to climb, mountaineer (without the kids), cycle tour, and camp--pretty much anything that will get us into the mountains or desert. We also love to cook, especially Indian food, but also Thai, Vietnamese, French, and good 'ol American.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

For probably the same reason as everyone else: to meet people all over.

Music, Movies, and Books

Music: ska, punk, folk. Favorites include: Streetlight Manifesto, Rancid, The Shins, Doc Watson, Bela Fleck, The Decemberists, DeVotcha.

I'm more keen on TV shows--they're more involved. And I'd list things here... But it'd take forever.

Books: Anything Russian--especially Dostoevsky and Turgenev.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Drive a car really fast while Ashley delivered a baby by herself. So... actually, that is just an amazing thing she has done. We'll tell you the story sometime.

Teach, Learn, Share

I love to learn about different ways of being. As an anthropologist, my approach to understanding others is one that takes every perspective seriously. I love to share the perspectives I learn about with others, to add diversity and depth to the world.
