One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
Hitchhiking from Luang Probang, Laos to Hanoi, Vietnam.
I was taken in by a family in a remote settlement in the Laos mountains after being stranded by a driver who did not take me to the Vietnamese border as we had previously agreed upon.
It didn't help that he didn't speak any English, and I, not nearly enough Laotian.
The following day one of the sons of that family was getting married. I was woken by the brothers dropping a tied up, squeeling hog 3 feet from where I was sleeping.
- Not your average wake up call.
This was followed by the son's father insisting I drink rice whiskey with him in celebration of the family's special day. I couldn't refuse the offer despite the fact that it was only 7 or 8 in the morning. Just prior to that, I walked outside, rubbing my eyes having just woken up and that very hog was getting sacrificed... alive :(
I watched in confusion, fascination and a healthy dose of horror as the poor animal was sliced open from the belly to it's chin very much alive.
Needless to say, I gladly shared a few slugs of rice whiskey afterwards to shake off what I just witnessed. From there, I returned to the misty mountains and continued my journey hitching rides to Hanoi.
