I once climbed to the top of a waterfall on a remote island in the far south of Japan called Iriomote. I stood on the top and looked across the jungle and the sea.... All the way to the top I was upset that I hadn't brought my camera, but regret left me the instant I saw the view -- it's something I'd rather let my imagination exaggerate over time than have preserved on a tiny piece of paper.

As I said, I'm hesitant to say precisely what I want to learn because I think the most profound lessons come when we're not expecting them, and are usually about things we didn't know were there to learn.

I certainly could show a traveler some good places to go and things to do around southern California.
