To work just hard enough to travel frequently
ABOUT ME
Hey I'm Darrin. I'm born and raised in Minneapolis.
I Studied digital photography at MCTC, and left 3/4 of the way through to live in India and do some personal photo work. Since then I've fallen back in love with my city. Nothing like these winters. I bartend, and do freelance photography. I have traveled quite a bit, and make it my mission to go abroad every year.
PHILOSOPHY
Life's to short to get worked up about everything. It's easier to go with the flow and laugh it off. It's also way more fun.
Bill Nye said it best:
"Everyone you meet knows something you don't." Isn't that what CouchSurfing is all about? Meeting new people and learning new things.
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING
I can host surfers and show them around Minneapolis. If you are just looking for a fun adventure through Minneapolis, I can help.
COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE
In our old apartment we had a few people (and a ferret) couchsurf with us. Kevin "KevCouch", my roommate always handled the couchsurfing biz, So I finally jumped on the bandwagon. We more recently had a guy surf at his new apartment and it was fun. He came in at night, had a few beers with us and left in the morning.
Interests
My passion is photography. I enjoy all types of outdoor activities, and used to guide canoe and hiking trips in northern Minnesota. I love biking, especially in the winter.
I'm really just looking for adventure. Whether that involves hopping a freight train, Finding a cool place to hike, or bar crawling I'm game.
Music, Movies, and Books
Love Wes Anderson, Darren Aronofsky and Quentin Tarantino films.
Futurama, Game of Thones, Louie, Parks and Rec.
Paulo Coelho, Vonnegut, and John Krakauer books get me motivated when I am traveling.
Music is always a broad subject, but I'll try. My music tastes range from Wilco/Blitzen Trapper/Akron.Family/Spoon/Black Keys to Kid Cudi/Roots/Busta Rhymes/K-Os. Throw in some James Brown/LCD Soundsystem/Soul Coughing and you can get an idea.
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
Every new experience is more amazing and different than the last. I was doing a photography project in India for 5 1/2 months, and out of the blue got accepted to a Jewish Birthright trip to Israel. From there I got a photography gig in London and Dublin. It was a crazy trip and all from going with the flow.
I got the chance to photograph the Trans Siberian railway for a travel show last year. Halfway through my stomach felt like something out of Alien. Going to some hospital looking straight out of a zombie movie in Ulan-Ude they rip me open and take my appendix. Lost an appendix and gained a pretty sweet scar. Not so much an amazing thing done, but done to me. Wouldn't recommend.
Teach, Learn, Share
I can teach you how to change a flat tire on your bike.
I can show you how to make a few cocktails.
I can teach you how to use your camera.
I can tell you where to go to eat cheap and delicious in Minneapolis.
I want to learn how to whistle really loud, (fox whistle?), and do a handstand.
