About Me

To use what is probably a very clichéd line on this website: I am very outgoing and love meeting new people. It may be an overused statement, but for me at least it's true!

I try to make new friends on every trip I go and while traveling solo can be great, I think it's always nice to experience a new place with someone else.

I would consider myself reasonably well travelled and in my current job I will be living outside of Ireland for years at a time, but there's always somewhere new to go or something unexpected to see!

I enjoy going out for drinks (some national stereotypes are accurate) and trying out the local nightlife and cuisine wherever I go.

I am a bit of a history nerd and I'd like to think I have a decent grasp on the history of most places I have travelled to. I think it's important to know a bit about a country's background before you can really get to know it.

I'm a pretty outdoorsy person and have no problem walking for an hour to get somewhere if needs be. I enjoy hill walking and mountain climbing and swimming in the ocean (much nicer than a pool).

In terms of sports, I used to do a fair bit of Maui Thai/kickboxing, in the last year I've gotten a bit lazy/unfit/fat, but hopefully I'll start doing it again in the next month or so (hopefully).

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I usually find myself either traveling with friends or my fiancée, so it isn't often that I travel solo. When I do find myself traveling alone, I tend to do pub crawls or walking tours to try and meet people.

Some of my friends have highly recommended couch surfing as a way to really get to know a place in a short space of time, as the host will often show people their favourite places and give some invaluable tips. This is exactly what I hope to get out of a couch surfing experience. I'd much prefer to sleep on someone's floor, meeting new friends and being shown places I might not otherwise find, than to stay in a hostel or hotel and not get to meet anyone!

I have not been in a position to host in Ireland, however, I will be moving to Lithuania later this year and will try to host regularly as I will have my own place and won't have to worry about flatmates!

Music, Movies, and Books

Music wise, I will listen to more or less anything, though I'm not a big fan of pop music. I am a big heavy metal fan. I've seen DragonForce, Disturbed, Rammstein and Iron Maiden in concert and will see Metallica later this year. That said, one of my favourite bands is Florence & the Machine (that woman is amazing!).

I'm a bit of a nerd, so I love all things fantasy and science fiction related. I think the Lord of the Ring's trilogy are probably both my favourite movie and book series. I could talk for hours about movies, books and TV shows, so I won't write it all out here!

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I did a Canyon Swing in the 'Last Resort' in Nepal (look it up on YouTube).

About seven years ago I travelled for a month in Nepal. I went to an adventure resort and they had (at the time at least) the largest canyon swing in the world and one of the top ten highest bungee jumps. I did both, but the canyon swing was by far one of the best experiences of my life. With the bungee jump I free fell for about 3-4 four seconds, whereas with the canyon swing its about 7. I can promise you those extra seconds can feel like an eternity when you're flying through the air in the middle of a massive canyon, hurtling towards a raging river hundreds of feet below! Can't recommend it enough!
