About Me

I'm a single, 50-year-old Caucasian male with 2 cats...
OK - I can't change those facts to make me sound better (but this isn't Tinder, so I'm cool with laying out the straight dope here!).
I'm definitely young-at-heart, so would be OK with younger folks looking for a place, or those my own age - I run Calgary's largest social club (http://www.meetup.com/CalgaryDoSomethingNew/ - currently 8,500 members - you might become #8,501!), so I have friends & acquaintances of all ages, all backgrounds, all walks of life... I can get along with just about anyone!

I have 2 cats - AKA: you should be OK with cat hair(!) although I'll clean up as best possible before your arrival!
I'm in a 2-bedroom condo (the master BR is mine, the 2nd is my den/office/gym/storage... I have a twin mattress to put down on the floor if you want closed-door-privacy, or an IKEA double-sofa-bed in the living room).
If a couple is coming out, I can give up the master BR's king bed for a night or two (but you're buying the beer!).

OK - the downside:
I am NOT a party guy - I would expect reasonable behaviour (no parties or guests here); and NO SMOKING... of ANYthing! I shouldn't need to say it, but no shooting, snorting or whatever-else-the-kids-today-do... (crap, I'm starting to sound like an old man... ).
I'm on the 2nd floor of a condo; if you truly need a cigarette, you can use the deck, but a chain-smoker would not really be a good fit...
You're welcome to cook your own meals - there's a grocery store on the same block as well as a nice pub & pharmacy. I'm a meat-eater and enjoy good beer, and would try new foods if you wanted to cook & share, but don't try turning me vegetarian - that would be a mistake! :)
I'm an early-riser - not by choice, but biology... so by the time 6am rolls around (even on weekends), I'm probably up - it doesn't at all mean you need to be, but it's just info for you.

Location?
My place is in the (deep!) SW of the City - see this Google map (https://www.google.ca/maps/dir/Bridlewood,+Calgary,+AB/Calgary,+AB/@50.9715688,-114.1976965,11z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m14!4m13!1m5!1m1!1s0x537175b36da2e00f:0x33f5f5f60093cb74!2m2!1d-114.1096198!2d50.8985261!1m5!1m1!1s0x537170039f843fd5:0x266d3bb1b652b63a!2m2!1d-114.0708459!2d51.0486151!3e0) - at 24th St & 162nd Ave SW (the area is called Bridlewood).
There's a city bus stop 100feet away, for a 10-minute ride (or 45-minute walk) to the LRT (that means the subway, metro, train, etc...) which can take you downtown in about 25 minutes.
If you have a car, I have a guest parking pass for my parking lot, and I'm about 30 minutes from downtown.
If you need to take transit, downtown is about 55-65 minutes away; the University & airport are about 15-20 minutes longer than that.
I know... I know... where I live is not terribly convenient for many people - but if you simply need to come & go a couple of times during your stay, it's not so bad. I had to take the bus/train downtown for work for 8 years!
Depending on timing, I may(!) be good to drop you off at the train, at least saving the bus ride.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I like meeting people & learning about other places.
It's like travelling without the expense.
I've travelled my own Canada, the US, Europe & Japan - have stayed with friends a few times and it usually makes a big difference to have a 'home base' that's not a plain, neutral hotel.
So, I'm now on the other side, offering to others.

Music, Movies, and Books

Jeez, where to start...?

Movies: Action/Comedy/Sci-Fi.
Anything by the Coen Brothers, or with a tongue-in-cheek sense of humour.

Music: Just about anything, but modern 'soft-rock' would be a generic term that covers it. What doesn't fit that term? Daft Punk, J-M Jarre, Kraftwerk...

Books: Not much of a reader (more of a TV guy), so not much to refer to here...

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

...if I told you, I'd have to kill you...

What I CAN admit to? Since taking over the lead for my social group several years ago, I've tried many things I'd never have even thought of doing solo; sporting games, medieval faires & museums, all kinds of things...
I've even been on the news & in the paper for some of the events I've hosted!

Teach, Learn, Share

Having been born/raised in (English) Canada, I know some French, but my time in the UK taught me that French (Canadian) isn't much like actual French (French!), so if you're FROM FRANCE, our conversations in French might be a struggle - but I'm game to try!

My Japanese interest comes from my sister-in-law coming from Japan, and my 2 visits there. I can help teach (very!! basic) Japanese conversational language skills.

I'm a computer geek, so I might be good helping fix an iPad or laptop...
My lifetime travel experience is good-to-verygood, so if you're moving on to other parts of the world after Calgary, I may be able to offer some advice.

What I Can Share with Hosts
