À propos de moi

Hello! My name is David Yang and I just graduated from an international school in Korea. Before heading off to college, I have decided to take a gap year to spend some time of self reflection and explore my interests. Many people around me were against the idea, because in Korea it's norm to graduate from college as soon as possible and acquire a stable job. Still, I believe this time will be definitely worth it. In the long-run, I honestly don't think entering college one year late would make that big of a delay. I am excited to see how this year will roll out.

Because I was born in the U.S, I have dual citizenship: one from America and another from South Korea. Although I was born in Portland, Oregon, I moved to Korea when I was three years old so I am not very accustomed to American culture. My fluency in English is due to the fact that I have attended an international school since when I was 8 years old.

I love meeting new people. Although I must admit that I do sometimes get awkward, that's a challenge I am willing to face if I can make a new friend. I don't think gender, race, age, or anything else should act as a barrier if two people are genuinely wanting to become closer to one another. I enjoy talking to people about a range of things, from their favorite hobbies to what truly gives meaning to their life. I believe talking to different people is one of the most fun ways to expand my knowledge and perspective. I understand that people have lived in different environments with unique experiences, so we may not agree on everything. But I think that's what makes it truly meaningful.

Pourquoi je suis sur Couchsurfing

Considering that I am only 19 years old, I have traveled to a good number of countries, but I don't think I have made the most out of any of the trips yet. I traveled in a very protected environment, either with my family or school clubs. We stayed in hotels and tended to move around the country within our group only. The experience felt mostly shallow and inauthentic.

Through Couchsurfing, I seek to really interact with the local people and get to know the culture. I have yet to try Couchsurfing so I am not 100% sure what to expect, but from what I've heard from others I think it will be a great experience.

Ce que j'aimerais partager avec mes hôtes

I will be travelling to many countries during my gap year, and, although I am not a great storyteller, I can share with you what have happened to me so far during my trips. Also, I am planning to purchase a small gift from each country and give it to the next host whom I stay with as a sign of gratitude - something that is unique to the country, maybe a traditional snack or souvenir.
