About Me

Hey! I'm David. I grew up in semi-rural Alberta and interested in how humanized technology can make the world a more inclusive place.

CURRENT MISSION

Huge shout out to my employer, who's letting me complete my tasks remotely while I investigate non-profits in a dozen of the United States' largest cities. In my travels, I will jump from agency to agency to discover how social justice-based organizations best use technology and data to represent their services and advocate for their population. These are difficult and interesting topics without much existing literature.

ABOUT ME

I currently work for Boyle Street Community Services, a non-profit that advocates and provides day-to-day services for the inner-city population of Edmonton. I love exploring nature, cities, and the thrill of the challenge.

My passion project in university was a social media app designed the way I thought best to meet people at school: without texting. I got around a dozen users and failed miserably. It was great.

I'm often torn between the essential beauty of nature and the complexity and reach of technology.

PHILOSOPHY

I believe challenge is the precursor to success. I believe those with privilege have an obligation to raise others. I believe less is more. I believe burritos can be necessary after a long day.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I think Couchsurfing is the most meaningful way to experience another city. I've met some great people through couchsurfing, both in my travels and hosting with my roommate Jacob (couchsurfing.com/people/jacob-ulickij)

Music, Movies, and Books

I dig YouTube and podcasts.

I get my political critique from Philip DeFranco and CANADALAND's Jesse Brown. Reply All, 99% Invisible, and This American Life are also some of my favorites. Pewds and h3h3 and makes me giggle, and I will never stop watching try not to laugh challenges. I saw Casey Neistat in person once.

I read biographies (Lincoln, William James, and Dorothy Day of recent), other non-fiction, and sci-fi

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I've spent 4 months and ~7,000 km bikecamping. It's a wonderful way to live and travel, full of minimalism, physical challenge, and independence. I've traveled the eastern provinces of Canada and the American west coast.

Teach, Learn, Share

I can teach about the logistics of actually building something technological. I can ruin Justin Trudeau for you. I can share stories of bicycle touring, acts of kindness, and an ex-Mormon worldview.

What I Can Share with Hosts

I don't cook, but I'm sucker for supporting local bakeries
