About Me
CURRENT MISSION
To experience new areas of the world that I haven't had the chance to see just yet.
ABOUT ME
Hey guys! I'm Deric and, until recently, I was a mechanical engineer working a desk job. Turns out that that wasn't what I wanted to do with life, so now I am travelling through Canada on my way to Alaska with a few friends. I don't know what I'll do after we get there, but I am looking forward to figuring something out!
PHILOSOPHY
I had a desk job for about a year in which I stared at a computer and had essentially no interaction with anyone else. The dream job, aye? Right out of college and with an engineering firm doing what I had been groomed to do. That experience taught me that life is too short and worth too much to sit behind a desk, and I decided to try and pursue a lifestyle that allowed me to see new things and meet new people on a consistent basis.
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING
I'm relatively new on the scene, but after having an excellent experience through a friends' surfing account I decided to open one of my own. After I settle down for a brief time I plan on hosting, although I don't know where that will be from - hopefully somewhere a bit more exciting than the Midwest, although I have a bit of a bias on that one
COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE
I've only had the one experience thus far but it has been excellent! The host was friendly, welcoming and, most importantly, had a warm shower (a godsend after bicycling for a few days in near freezing temperatures)
Interests
Skydiving, Scubadiving, Rock Climbing, Hiking, Motorcycling, Bicycling... pretty much anything outdoors that gets the adrenaline flowing. I also enjoy the occasional video game, cooking, and dancing (swing and salsa, though I don't have as much experience with the latter as I'd like)

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
I've had the pleasure of traveling across Europe for several weeks as well as taking a quick trip to Israel to see the old city in all of its glory. I've also gone Scuba Diving, Sky Diving, Rock Climbing, and am currently on a cross country trip from Duluth, Minnesota to Anchorage, Alaska!
Teach, Learn, Share
I have my bachelors in Mechanical Engineering, though that really only shows that I can do some basic Math and have a tolerance for the mindless. I've also recently pursued my EMT-Basic license and hope to be able to volunteer/work with an ambulance company to gain some experience that I can use to help out in developing areas around the world, and hope to continue to pursue my interests in outdoor activities for the rest of my life.
