Overview
About Me
Debbie means BEE in Hebrew. BUZZ BUZZ.
I am an adventurous, fun-loving and humorous person. I might come off at first as quiet and somewhat reserved, but once I get to know more about you and feel more comfortable around you, then I become chattier and wittier.
BEWARE OF MY QUIRKS. I am a quirky person. I like quirky things. I say quirky things.
Incomplete List of My Quirks:
- I love llamas and alpacas. They are SO FLUFFY.
- I love bloomers. Their shape, their texture, and even the word bloomers. One of my friends sewed me a pair of bloomers as a birthday present.
- My friends and I use cheeses as metaphors for movie. For example, Gone with the Wind is EPIC CHEESE, the Twilight series is CHEESY CHEESE, and a bad movie would be MOULDY CHEESE
- I love the phrase 'nice boat'. It is a Japanese meme, and this phrase has become an inside joke between my friends and I.
- I am into weird food combinations (e.g. rice + pudding, mince meat + brown sugar).
- I used to have a 'pillar boyfriend': It is a concrete pillar in my high school that is very huggable in summer, because it cools down your body and makes the heat more bearable. Thus it became my 'boyfriend'.
- Sometimes I make really bad puns.
- Please don't judge me, but I find Human Centipede to be insanely hilarious...It is disgusting, but so much so that it cracks me up every time I watch the trailer. XD
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
It is all about meeting new people, forming connections, and building new friendships!
A couple of years ago, I have had an Australian friend stay in my house for a week when he visited Hong Kong. It was a very enjoyable experience, both for me and for my family. We (more like my mom) cooked him meals, I took him to a couple of awesome spots for sightseeing, had late night talks about random stuff, and he took us out for dinner and gave us a goodbye gift (a box of yummy chocolates) before he left Hong Kong. When I first learnt of Couchsurfing a few months ago I immediately recalled the amazing time I had with my Australian friend. I hope I will be able to re-live that kind of experience, where I can find not just a host/guest, but a friend to talk to and hang out with.
Also, I am on Couchsurfing because I am super flexible with my accommodation: Provide me with a horizontal surface, and I will be able to sleep like a log. I prefer spending more money on museum tours, gifts and souvenirs, and of course trying out lots of delicacies. Basically, for me it is Fun + Food > Where I sleep. XD
Interests
I LOVE drama. I have studied naturalism and Epic Theatre back in high school, and I am currently studying Physical Theatre in the University of Kent as an exchange student, and I am having a blast. Ever since joining the Shakespeare in my university Theatre Group, I have also begun to be interested in Shakespeare's plays. My favourite plays are A Midsummer Night's Dream (I played Puck!) and Macbeth (I played Lady Macbeth back in Year 8 lol)
I am a fan of anime. I used to be more addicted to it, but now I just watch it occasionally to de-stress my mind. However, I have been a faithful viewer of Detective Conan ever since I was 6. I have had my fair share of nightmares back in those days, all thanks to Detective Conan...
I love watching the reality show Survivor. I watch the Amazing Race and Masterchef too, but Survivor is my absolute favourite. I used to dream of immigrating to the U.S. just so I can apply for Survivor. (I have not given up on this dream yet)
I have recently begun to learn Taekwondo. I enjoy the rush of adrenaline during sparring sessions, and the satisfaction I feel after making through a gruelling 2-hour lesson. I am still a white belt, and I am hoping to attain my yellow-white belt soon. I also started to learn belly dance, where I know a few basic moves and can dance a few simple routines.
Baking is new on my hobby list too! I started to bake after coming to England, because my house in Hong Kong doesn't have an oven. So far I have made chocolate chip cookies, snicker doodles, red velvet cake, and cheesecake. I have (semi-)succeeded in persuading my parents to buy an oven when I go back to Hong Kong.

Music, Movies, and Books
I am absolutely CRAZY about musicals. My all-time favourites are the Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables, Wicked and Cats. I also love the German musical Elisabeth, even though I missed the chance to watch it. I came across the song Ich Gehör Nur Mir on youtube last year, and that led me to fall in love with Elisabeth. Furthermore, I am totally in love with a Japanese all-female musical theatre troupe called the Takarazuka Revue. I watched one of their shows last summer and I AM DEFINITELY GOING TO WATCH THEIR PERFORMANCE AGAIN.
I like classical music too. My favourite pieces are Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata and Tempest. Symphonic rock is another music genre I like.
As for movies, I pretty much watch everything, though I have a penchant for tragedy films. My all-time favourites are Titanic (no surprise there), Life is Beautiful, Schindler's List, and Letters from Iwo Jima. I haven't watched the Theory of Everything yet, but it is definitely on top of my to-watch list. I recently became a Star Wars fan, and I love it. Trust me, the Force is strong with me.
I find French and Japanese films to be exquisite, because I think they have an unique sense of aesthetics. My favourite French films are Small Change (L'Argent de poche), The Chorus (Les Choristes), and Amélie; my favourite Japanese films are Confessions, Grave of the Fireflies, and Ikigami. Pan's Labyrinth (El Laberinto del Fauno) is also a favourite of mine (and a family favourite too).
My favourite books are Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte and A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini. Wuthering Heights is irreplaceable: It has helped me go through hard times and gave me courage and strength to overcome the challenges I faced as a teenager. A Thousand Splendid Suns is a beautifully-written book. I have never cried so hard over a book until I read A Thousand Splendid Suns, and it is definitely one of the books I would remember and recall fondly for my entire life, because everything in the book, the plot, the characters, the style, is captivating.
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
-Joined the Hong Kong University's Shakespeare Theatre Group last year, in which I played Puck in A Midsummer Night's Dream last year.
- Performed A Midsummer Night's Dream at Hong Kong's 2015 Shakespeare in the Port. (There is even a play review about us!)
- Travelled to India with my Indian best friend as our high school graduation trip. A once in a lifetime experience!
- Went backpacking in Japan for 3 weeks, travelling all the way from the south of Japan (Kagoshima) to the north (Hokkaido).
- Wrote a 8000 word Japanese research paper in high school.
- Worked as a Halloween Performer in an amusement park.
Teach, Learn, Share
I can teach you Cantonese, Mandarin, and Japanese! Hopefully you can teach me about your language too.
We can talk about our tastes in books, movies, music, and recommend ones we really like to one another!
What I Can Share with Hosts
Everything and anything you want to know about Hong Kong, Mainland China, and the Chinese culture! Well, I was exaggerating when I said 'everything', but you can ask me about anything, and I'll try my best to answer you. ;-D
Interesting life stories, funny episodes, travel experiences and recommendations.
My new-found cooking and baking skills. Or, if you feel a bit trepidatious about it (since I am new to the art of cooking and baking), I can share my dishwashing skills, because I consider myself to be a pretty good dishwasher.
My sense of humour and (possibly bad) puns.
