Reason for Hope by Jane Goodall
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
While in
Tonyo, Tanzania, Deus worked with local farmers to alleviate conflict with endangered baboons, which
had been raiding village gardens and destroying crops. Reversing a decades-long habit of fighting the
baboons through deforesting their habitat and killing the animals, Deus devised a plan to plant baboon-
friendly crops in the hills, drawing the animals away from the villages and keeping the landscape intact.
The program was lauded internationally and was nominated for the Volvo Adventure Environmental
Award.
