Bicycle touring across the Nevada desert in the middle of the summer (50-55°C average, bike weighing about 50kg, no clouds in the sky - ever, head wind, lips cracking, and climbing on average 2000m elevation a day) on a route described as the Loneliest road in America:

"It's totally empty', says an AAA counselor. There are no points of interest. We don't recommend it.' The 287-miles stretch of U.S. 50 highway running from Ely to Fernley, Nevada, passes 9 towns, 2 abandoned mining camps, a few gas pumps and an occasional coyote. 'We warn all motorist not to drive there', say the AAA rep, 'unless they're confident of their survival skills'."
