Why I’m on Couchsurfing

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Officially I have Couchsurfed in Russia, Oman and Yemen.
I have had a few guests at my home in Madison, Wisconsin.
However, I have been Couchsurfing internationally for the past 35 years in dozens of countries.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

By 2007 I finally made it to all 15 former Soviet Republics. It took me 20 years. When I was younger I fell in love with Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union, and was lucky to have studied and traveled there extensively. Believe me, it was really a trip before Wall fell. I have been to Russia ten times, Ukraine nine and all 15 former Soviet Republics. I have been to most cities on the Silk Road and will visit the rest before I die. I have also been to many countries in Africa, Asia, the Americas and the Middle East. I love remote places like Svalbard, Easter Island, the Galapagos, Siberia and the Russian Far East. Some unique places I have visited are Turkmenistan, Somaliland, North Korea, Transnistria and Abkhazia.

Teach, Learn, Share

I have more than my share of stories.
I'll tell you how I sneaked into North Korea from the Yalu River in China in 2006. I also visited legally in 2013.
I backpacked Iraq during the war a few years ago.
I have visited most cities on the Silk Road from Beijing to Venice.
I visited the Soviet Union three times as well as all European "Communist" countries before the Berlin Wall fell. The one exception was Albania which I couldn't get into until 1992.
