About Me

I once heard that your values and beliefs are the most important things in life. So, I guess that would be a good starting point.

I want to make the world a better place. I would like to stop wars, famines, poverty and inequalities. I believe in friendship and love, and that there is very little point in judging if you do not want to be judged. I respect people for what they are and dislike those behaving a bit snobbishly and without respect. I learned these values and acquired these beliefs since I was a child from my family, friends and education.

I grew up in Gabrovizza a little village on the outskirts of Trieste the capital of the northern eastern region Friuli-Venezia Giulia. Trieste is a beautiful town between the Adriatic Sea and Slovenia. It has a very complicated history, but also a rich cultural and ethnic background, which at time make me feel more like a Mitteleuropean person, rather than Italian (I like to play around with Italian stereotypes though). I have great story to tell about, family war experiences and borders (the last stretch of the cold war divide was between Trieste and ex-Yugoslavia)

I had a quite standard life until 2003. I completed my secondary school education in Trieste, I left university studies on the side at the time, I looked for jobs in my area, but it was quite hard to find something decent. So, on the 13th of March 2003 I moved to London. Once in London I discovered what I wanted to do in life and decided to study Sociology and European Policy Studies at London South Bank University. At the end of my undergraduate studies I was offered to do a PhD in Criminology studying corporate and state crimes (aka crime of the powerful). I have completed my PhD recently. I have been teaching at the university since 2011, but the industry is shrinking at the moment and the future in uncertain. Despite these difficulties, I am not going to give up attempting to change the world because I believe that you can only achieve results in life if you do what you love. Thus, teaching at university level and doing research can help me achieving my primary life goal, which is to make the world a better place.

I am a sporty person and since 2012 I have developed a passion for beach volleyball (I am an amazing blocker if you are interested), which I am practicing on a regular basis. I would like to travel more, but I find it expensive. My ideal holidays are cultural driven, hiking and skiing. I am the kind of person that would get bored in beautiful beaches (unless there is something to learn or a beach volleyball court).

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I have met a friend that does it and I find it an interesting experience. I like the values behind the idea and feel guilty to registering knowing that I cannot host people for the time being (no space). I like the idea of sharing and making new friends and the system seems quite safe. I am still not 100% sure about how the thing works and the untold rules, but if you see me active in a few months it will probably means that I enjoy it. I guess the first step is to try both looking for hosts and hosting.

Interests

I guess I have to give a list:
Learning, history, criminology, social policy, cultures, technology, politics, sports, beach volleyball, skiing, cycling, hiking, food nutrition, well-being, DIY, inventing stuff, finding solutions, sustainability, environmental stuff.

Music, Movies, and Books

Music: I listen to many different genres of music and I do not have a specific band or musician I like. I like jazz on a Sunday afternoon and pop on a Friday and Saturday night. I believe that music can amplify your experience in specific situations.
Movies: Sci-Fi, adventures, dramas and documentaries generally. I grew up watching the Gunnies almost every time it was raining and I think that Back to the Future is genius. I do not like horror movies.
Books: I tend to read dry (but interesting) criminological books most of the time and find little space to read other types of books.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I sleep talk often and walk sometimes... Not exactly amazing, but funny for those who are aware of it! ; )

Teach, Learn, Share

Teach that we can be better kinder, respectful and more sustainable.
Learn to listen and respect.
Share love, friendship and respect.

What I Can Share with Hosts

With my host I can share kindness, respect, knowledge. If people host couchsurfers they are already pretty cool from my point of view. I am quite good at partying and appreciate people's company. I can also cook and clean and I am always ready for some DIY house, bicycle and computers stuff.
