About Me

We are Dirk (39 years) and Franni (34 years). I am a Life Coach and Franni is an actress, dancer, director, choreographer, speaker and yoga teacher.

We decided to leave our beautiful home in Kiel, Germany for the next 18 months to live at different places in the world, that we feel drawn to.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

My wife Franni and I are currently travelling around the world. Each 3 months we are heading for a new destination. We decided that we want to take our time with each destination, actually live there, take the time to get to know the people, culture and nature, instead of just rushing from one place to the next. We are interested in deep connections and getting to know the real life at the places we choose as our temporary homes.

And that's why we love to be on Couchsurfing. We see this platform as an amazing oportunity for us to connect with the local people. Instead of hanging around in hotels or hostels full of other travellers we love to deep dive into the country by connecting with people that actually live there.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

On february the 22nd, 2011 there was a horriffic natural desaster happening in Christchurch, New Zealand. A 6.3 eartquake hit the city. 81 people died and thousands lost their homes.

Meanwhile a friend of mine and I where in an airplane coming from Sydney and just hours after the earthquake happened we landed in Christchurch. We were in total disbelieve when we saw the devastation on our way from the airport to our hostel. The whole city looked like a war zone.

Our plan was to come to New Zealand to earn some money for our travels. Now we where facing a whole new situation. Our hostel was cut of from electricity, we had no running water and we had to shit in a bucket. We were the only guests left in the hostel.

We decided to stay in Christchurch (even though there was no jobs, after the earthquake) because we wanted to help the people. It was amazing to see how everyone came together and so many people tried to help the local people in need. I think we worked for a whole week, 12 hours every day to clean up the aftermath of the eartquake and bring food and other essentials to people in need.

During that time one local family man noticed our efforts and was so impressed about our selflesness, that he invited us to his home, where there was still electricity and running water. For the next 2 weeks we were welcomed as part of his family. We got our own little room, got food, spend time with their kids and enjoyed their amazing hospitality. And every day we would continue to help the people of Christchurch who were still in need of help.

After these two final weeks something totally unexpected happened: the family wanted to show us their gratitute and gifted us their old car! They knew about our low finances and wanted to support us.

Thinking about this whole journey still gives me goosebumps. Even though the reason why all of this happened was a really sad one, I am super grateful for the experience. It showed me how great it can feel to be of service and just try to help others.
