About Me
CURRENT MISSION
to find a way of stating my mission without sounding cliched.
ABOUT ME
I'm a writer and a high school teacher, passionate about whatever I care about - my friends, my students, my subjects (English and Media) and my values and beliefs. I love to live spontaneously, though I'm also a planner - though my traveling helped me overcome this a bit, as these elements of my character conflict somewhat! I love meeting people and having great conversations, whether the person is in my life for a moment or fifty years.
I travelled the US and Canada for no better reason than to discover, learn, grow and collect stories. Now I am home in Australia. At the moment, I'm based in Adelaide, SA, the city in which I grew up.
PHILOSOPHY
"The true meaning of life is to plant trees,
under whose shade you do not expect to sit."
- Nelson Henderson
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING
Interested in couches - sharing mine and meeting other people's :) I love helping people and interacting with people who challenge me.
COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE
I've hosted quite a few people, and have couchsurfed across Canada and some of the US. All experiences so far have been great - I love hearing others' stories!
Interests
art of any form, but particularly prose, poetry and music... Also shopping, live music, horseriding, drinking wine, deep conversations, chilling and watching TV shows back to back, or good films, yoga, and I'm getting into running.
Music, Movies, and Books
Books: Austen, Plath, Fitzgerald, Isobelle Carmody, Carlos Ruiz Zafon... so many! Movies/TV: Across the Universe, V For Vendetta, Moulin Rouge, Fight Club, Anchorman, Zoolander, anything involving Joss WhedonMusic: Ben Folds, Regina Spektor, Glass Animals, Grouplove, Vampire Weekend, anything alternative/indie or played on Triple J (Australian alternative radio station)
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
The most amazing thing I've seen was the selfless, unmaterialistic nature of the people of Papua New Guinea. I complimented a girl once on her billum (woven bag) more to make conversation than anything, and next thing I knew, she'd pulled everything out of it and put her stuff into a plastic bag, and handed me the billum, telling me, "This is for you." How many Westerners would do that?
Teach, Learn, Share
Being a teacher, I am a lifelong learner who loves new things and would be happy to share what I know! I can share stuff about creative writing, literature or the English language, but could also teach you a bit on flute, voice, guitar, ukulele, keyboard or basic music theory. I can also take you horseriding and give some pointers there, though I'm far from an expert!
I love learning in general and would be delighted with anything couchsurfers could teach me, but would particularly love to learn photography, French and how to draw well (I've heard stick figures don't actually count as drawing!).
