About Me

CURRENT MISSION

To explore the world and evolve as a human in response to my experiences.

ABOUT ME

I've discovered a great hunger to experience the world. Traveling very little as a young person, when I hit 30 I was suddenly desperate to make up for lost time. I'm a creative person, constantly busy with new projects and events. I perform in, costume and direct theatre. I plan weddings and parties. I craft mixed media paper arts at home. I love fashion, but with my own spin. I love art and try to visit museums in all the cities I visit. I enjoy good food (vegetarian) and wine, and don't believe that a higher price tag means a better meal. I'm back in school and loving the challenge of absorbing all the information. I'm intrigued by history and have dabbled extensively in genealogy. I have a big extended family, but am currently solo with no family of my own. My favorite place to shop in a foreign city is the thrift stores or flea markets. I'm eager to fill my life with worldly experiences to reflect upon when the day comes that my bones will no longer withstand long travels. :)

PHILOSOPHY

The best way to predict the future, is to create it.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I talk up CS to anyone that will listen. I've hosted lots of folks outside of CS and am always encouraging people to join in. Have surfed a bit with others, and hope to host again once I get settled.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I had a great time couchsurfing in Prague, Germany, Spain and Amsterdam. I loved the unique flavor of each city and the joy of spending time with my hosts, exploring the cities from their perspective, shopping for local groceries, and making dinner together.

Interests

I'm brimming with interests. My primary ones are: art, costuming, theatre, movie-viewing, planning events and weddings, reading, genealogy, history, TRAVEL, and cooking. I've acted, directed, and costumed theatrical productions. I've researched my own (and others) family history back to the mid-1500s. I've travelled through North America, into Mexico and Canada, the UK and parts of Europe and hope to visit some new continents soon. I'm a creative person and love anything that allows me to flex my creative muscles.

Music, Movies, and Books

Movies: Brokeback Mountain, Cold Mountain, anything Pedro Almodovar, Moulin Rouge, Monsoon Wedding, Compleat Female Stage Beauty, anything with beautiful costumes or lovely foreign views.
Books: Hmm...this is tricky. I read a lot, but rarely remember titles and authors. Recent reads include Girl with a Dragon Tattoo series, Orson Welles 'Down and Out in Paris and London,' Oscar Wilde's 'Importance of Being Earnest,' the Paris Wife, a ton of chick-lit ala Sophie Kinsella, Tom Robbins, Diana Gabaldon, and of course Harry Potter. I'm missing some great and memorable books here, but I'm pretty diverse in my interests.
Music: I like most music with the exception of heavy metal or hair metal and rave-like house music. I particularly like: Willie Nelson, Alicia Keys, Beyonce, Ani DiFranco, Allison Krause, The White Stripes, Gogol Bordello, various mixes by Stephane Pompougnac, Shirley Bassey, Rufus Wainwright, Johnny Cash, Lady Gaga, Norah Jones, Madeleine Peyroux, Lyle Lovett, The Cliks A Fine Frenzy, and Ella Fitzgerald.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

- Found, and met, my siblings after 30+ years.
- Traced my family back to Ireland, then stood at the pulpit of my great-great-great-great Grandfathers church.
- Visiting The Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Prado in Madrid, Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Mucha Museum in Prague, Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek in Copenhagen, Van Gogh and Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Museum for Central Africa in Brussels, National Gallery and V&A in London and many many more.
- Went ziplining through the treetops of Kauai.
- Piloted an airplane over the Sonoma Coast of California.
- Learned to ride a motorcycle.
- Directed (and helped write) a play about women's choices to become or not become mothers.
- Watched my many neices and nephews be born.
- Moved to England for grad school having never before set foot in the country.

Teach, Learn, Share

Things I can teach include: genealogy/family history research, some theatre and costuming, computer skills, paper arts, cooking a few tasty dishes, how to plan a wedding or party, and best ways to score in a thriftshop!
Thinks I'd love to learn: really want to learn German (having taken beginners courses but need lots more practice); anything about art; new vegetarian recipes; how to travel better, cheaper, and more openly; and photography.
