About Me

CURRENT MISSION

I reached my goal by moving to Cape Town! But I don't live in town town, I am much further south in a coastal suburb called Lakeside (Muizenberg). Been here for 2 years and a bit. I lived in Johannesburg and Pretoria before coming down here.

ABOUT ME

Road trips! Cats! Mountains! Afrika Burn! Quite the ambivert. Level headed, mature, responsible and sometimes a festival going party animal. At home I love quiet and routine. Open-minded, non-religious. Very candid, not diplomatic or sensitive much. No guard in front of my mouth. Not aloof or mysterious at all. Loves making food for people or informing them about what I know and don't know. I am not 20 anymore so not the best person to ask about trendy bars and clubs, I know more about good places to see in terms of nature or where to shop for food etc.
My partner lives approximately 1400 km away, so I am alone a lot. I love my own company but in a new city, I do not have loads of friends and connections yet. So meeting strangers from other places can fill that gap.

The photographs on here are old, I need to upload some new ones!

PHILOSOPHY

All things in moderation. But make sure you do A LOT of different things. Be nice to others. Life is short, remind yourself every day to never take good things for granted. Not really traveling overseas at all much, but am still doing my best to explore my own country. Sleep routines are important!

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I love the CS concept and I can see what an amazing difference it can make for the traveler. Travel is our dream, and sometimes the only way we can achieve it is by cutting costs on accommodation. Couchsurfing is also a good way to find your feet if you are in an unfamiliar city and your only clue of what to do and where to go is from the internet. Which is sometimes accurate and other times not. So these are things I would like to offer, and one day receive when I do get out there again.

Interests

Cooking. Nutrition. Laughing. Hiking (moderate). Seeing remote and beautiful places. Road-trips. Reading. Due to the nature of my work I need a lot of visual stimulation. I love nature, from the big mountains to little tiny flowers under your feet. I likes to entertain and whip up great meals. I love taking photos. I play computer games sometimes, and try to fly fish a few times a year.

Music, Movies, and Books

Monolink, Aurora, Kiasmos, bjork, the younger brother, olafur arnalds, royksopp, to name but a few. Books - escapism like fantasy and sci-fi mostly. Series like Altered Carbon, Black Mirror, Mr Robot, and anything animated. And erm I've listened to the Harry Potter audiobooks by Stephen Fry at least 3 times, it helps with my insomnia. Stephen Fry ruined audiobooks for me, nobody is as good a narrator!!

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Best experience overseas was Patagonia, wow. just. wow. Perito Moreno Glacier gasp. Torres del Paine, good grief! The other amazing thing I did was go to rehab for alcohol. My life is so much better now.

Teach, Learn, Share

South africa is unique in many ways. Our history is mad. Like everywhere else! Our leaders are corrupt assholes that are ruining the country and stripping it dry (to each his own with little thought for future generations) but the people are generally pretty amazing, super friendly. We are a tough, jovial bunch in the end, despite the daily challenges. We are a "self-driving" nation as public transport is a joke, so road-trips, "braai's" and friends are in our veins. Our society is still very much segregated, its only the millennials and younger that are growing up together as a "rainbow nation" and not always everywhere. The older generations are still very racist (both sides, believe me). Ignorance is always behind fear, and fear is always behind hate. Sometimes time is the only healer.
