About Me

CURRENT MISSION

To have adventures and meet interesting people!

ABOUT ME

I am a usual extrovert and occasional introvert in search of interesting people, amazing places, and adventurous activities. I try to love people for who they actually are, not who they appear to be. I am often structured but usually spontaneous, sometimes mathematical and often artistic, right brain oriented as much as my left brain will let it get away with it. I try to do it all, and love the feeling of learning something new. I succeed as often as I fail, but I appreciate the failures about as much as I do the successes. I try to learn, teach, and grow with the people I surround myself with. I love my friends and family. I share a connection with the places I've been. The things I do shape who I am on a day to day basis. And I'm always hungry for more.

PHILOSOPHY

I am constantly trying to balance my social, intellectual, emotional, physical, and spiritual selves into some semblance of order. I believe that in doing this, one can become a whole person. I am better at some of these things than others.

Everyone has the capacity to be happy, no matter what situation you might find yourself in.

I believe in the goodness of people as individuals, and try to see everyone for the good aspects of their personalities, and not for their failures. Intention is everything, and I keep this in mind when looking at people.

I try to be completely honest with myself.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I lived in a house that has hosted dozens of surfers in the short time I've been here, and I have continued to host after leaving. I've couch surfed many times, both through couchsurfing and just with people I've met, and I think it is an amazing way to meet people, see new places, and build trust in the human race.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Some of the most interesting people I know I have met through couchsurfing. I met a man who lives on less than 6000 dollars a year who lived in our basement for 6 months, before promptly spending almost everything he had on a bus ticket to the Florida Keys, where he lived in the woods. I believe he is currently in Hawaii working on a chocolate farm? I love meeting people who live their lives outside the conventional limits of society, and couchsurfing has allowed me to do that.

Interests

Hard work quiets my mind and focuses me in a way that few other things can. When I find something new that captures my attention, I throw myself at it with everything I have. I have done this in many aspects of my life. My official academic pursuits included a BS in physics with a minor in mathematics, but unofficially I study literature, language, agriculture, psychology, biology, astrology, actually pretty much anything that ends in 'ology'. I love learning the way the world works, the way the living things in it interact, and how that impacts us, the world, and the universe in different ways.

I am a very physically active person, and I have a particular passion for what most people would consider 'extreme' sports. I am super in to cycling, both on the road and on the trail, and love working on bikes almost as much as I enjoy riding them. I longboard, wakeboard, and snowboard, and would probably enjoy any other board sport as well (kiteboarding is next on my list). I slackline, and am getting to be a decent climber. I practice object manipulation, which in short is the act of using an object as an extension of your body. In particular I do fire manipulation in the form of poi, and I can swallow fire.

I love building and fixing things, and have many years of experience woodworking. I have built two and half boats (the last one will be finished soon).

Music, Movies, and Books

I enjoy moving movies that make you think.

Music is important to me; nothing moves me quite as much. I appreciate music that is honest with itself, and not trying to be anything its not.

I've read far and wide, pretty much all of the classics, and lots of lesser known works as well. Some of my favorite authors are Fitzgerald, Kesey, Bukowski, Eggers, and Sedaris.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

The things that really stick out in my mind whenever I think of something amazing are never things I've done, but places I've seen. The energy and awe we can find in nature far surpass anything an individual achievement could make me feel. Approaching the Rockies from the salt flats of Utah, looking out on the rolling hills of Tuscany in spring, hiking through a valley in the Dolomite mountains; these are the things that leave me awestruck. This is why travel is so important to me, seeing these things gives me an appreciation for life that no man made object, idea, or accomplishment ever could.

Teach, Learn, Share

I would love to learn anything you want to share with me. I'd be happy to teach you anything I know how to do.
