Sobre mí

CURRENT MISSION

To die laughing

ABOUT ME

Hi!

I'm a well-travelled Englishman who has been lucky enough to enjoy the great generosity of complete strangers from around the world. I was always very moved by such kindness. Couch Surfing is my chance to be generous to other strangers.

I know what it is like to be a stranger in a strange town and so if you are in my town then get in touch. I will do what I can to give you a warm welcome. I'm happy to help!

Por qué estoy en Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I am less interested in staying at other people's homes as I am quite content to stay in hotels but I would definitely like to meet people for socialising when I visit other places.

I'm much more interested in meeting people for coffee, meals, a bit of sightseeing, nights out and the fun and interest of meeting with people from other cultures and exchanging ideas, experiences and some laughter.

I can host at a push. I have only a sofa to offer and not a bed.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I have never couch surfed before!

Intereses

Flamenco guitar playing
Music is a way to express emotions of passion, excitement, joy and melancholy like nothing else I know of and so this is why I play flamenco guitar. The rhythms excite me and the harmonies stir me. I got so into it that I used to take all of my holidays in Seville just to get guitar lessons. I sometimes play in pubs on open mic nights (which can be nerve wracking!). This summer I will go to Granada. It's high time for a few more lessons and some of that authentic passion.

Gym training
I used to detest going to the gym but I was getting flabby so to deal with my lack of willpower I hired a personal trainer. 8-months later on and I've lost the beer gut and look better than I have done for many years. To my surprise, I have become one of those guys who goes to the gym willingly! I'm so glad that I made the effort.

Boxing
My trainer got me into boxing and there's a lot more to it than you might think. It's dynamic, requires a lot of speed and coordination and is a great stress reliever. I confess that I was a wimpy kid but now I'm in training for an amateur fight in April. That's going to test whether I'm a man or a mouse. That said, overcoming fears is perhaps the most satisfying thing that you can ever do (even though it's sometimes terrifying).

Portraits and caricatures
I was always drawing as a kid and I liked to draw faces. As I got better I did a lot of portraits in pencil, charcoal, pastels and oils. I gave it up for a long time but the itch was still there so I've taken it up again recently. I didn't realise how much I missed it. I'm now actively looking for sitters...

Manga/comic book drawing
The biggest love of my childhood was reading comic books and then trying to draw my own. My childhood dream was to become a comic book artist and I did put a portfolio together to attempt to get a career this way. Unfortunately I wasn't good enough so I had to give up on that dream. It was a bitter pill to swallow and so I didn't do any art for the best part of 10-years. Digital technology, however, has made such things easier to do so I've invested in some tech and now I'm getting back into it. Just a few baby steps at the moment.

Sci-fi reading
My favourite genre is science fiction. I know, there's a lot of awful science fiction about but the good stuff can expand your mind. I love those 'What if?' questions and exploring where those thoughts take me.

Hip Hop Dancing
There are some rhythms from some music that I just find irresistible. When I hear them I just can't help myself and I have to dance. It mostly happens with funk, disco and hip hop. I even used to have hip hop dance lessons. There aren't any good clubs in Derby so I seldom dance these days but if the music's right and I've had a beer or two then I can still get my freak on.

Travel
I find it fascinating to absorb other cultures and understand how other people live. That's why I like to stay in once place for extend periods rather than go sightseeing. I've lived and worked in New York, Thailand, Australia, Spain, Japan, Germany and Switzerland. Of course, no other nation has a sense of humour like us Brits. That's why I keep coming back here :-D

Karaoke
When I lived out in Asia it was obligatory to sing karaoke. I hated it at first but now I can never get enough of it! There's nothing like singing to make you feel happy.
