About Me
CURRENT MISSION
To formalise my couch surfing ways
ABOUT ME
Are you people sure this is not a dating service? This feels like a very lavalife question to me... I'm Canadian with a spiritual pull to Africa. (I keep going back there!) I'm trying to start an NGO, while working for the man to pay my bills. I'm currently dirt poor, but my lotto ticket should win any day now!
I had a fish, but then he died. I was too sad to get another one. I have more friends in other parts of the word than I have friends in the city where I live. I'm not sure if that is a good or bad thing, but I am always looking to increase the numbers of friends I have!
PHILOSOPHY
Travel karma: If you see a chance to help, you should. It could be you next time. and just because you don't live in the place you're at, doesn't mean you can't give directions!
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING
I'm participating by trying out the service. I've already encouraged to friends to try it, but they're not "risk takers" like me. Not my fault if they don't know how to live! But I will keep plugging the site!
COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE
I've had many informal couch surfing experiences. My favorite was when I was in Ghana and two guys on a bus gave me directions to their mother's place and told me to go stay there, while they went to another town. I insisted they write a note for their mom explaining what I was doing at her house... She didn't even bat an eye when I walked up the stairs to her top floor apartment and said hello as she was preparing lunch in the kitchen. It was the best weekend of my life!
I got to return the karma favour the next year with a Togolese guy who stayed on my couch for 3.5 months. He spoke no English and my Dad offered him "jus de pomme de terre". To the guy's credit, he gave my dad a strange look, but drank. My Dad realised his mistake when he saw the look of relief wash over our friend's face whe he knew it was apple juice and not the potato juice my Dad had offered him.

Music, Movies, and Books
History, Historical fiction, political stuff... I'm a whore for books, so I will read just about anything, just not "Red Badge of Courage"!
Movies and music are just background noise to reading...
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
I got a namesake in Mali! Okay, that is something someone else did that is Amazing, but I saw her and it was amazing to see her.
Teach, Learn, Share
Be open. Just because you don't like an activity at home, doesn't mean it's the same somewhere else! Not a fan of bad Kung Fu movies, but in Africa, it's one of the best ways to pass the time and meet friends!
