About Me

RED ALERT! I'm new to the Couchsurfing community so feel free to message me about things in my profile that doesn't work very well! :)

*Not hosting right now, I'm travelling from september to january :)

If I had only three words to describe myself, it would be :

ART / MEDIA : Art is definitely a vague term that is probably use on many other CS profiles..! I'll try to be more clear... When I say "Art", I'm not talking about sculptures or painting or drawing, I suck at that, even though I love studying these forms of art. I added MEDIA because I'm much more into cinema, music, journalism, acting and photography. Since I'm 11 years old, I'm on stage at least two or three times a year! Let me just say what I do very simply, even though it will look like I'm loving myself too much and have an ego the size of the International Space Station : I do theater and I studied in Cinematography and Media, so I studied a bit of photography/photoshop, a bit of journalism and a bit of Art History too. I've done 5 movies. 2 of them massively sucks, one is very personal and the other 2 are quite successful here..! My dream job would be to work whether in front or behind the camera. To add more to that, I play the guitar in a metal band called Victims of Time :)

HISTORY : I'm a huuuuuuge history freak. Like, a maniac. The older it is, the cooler it is. I find that there is something unique when you observe the past. It amazes me to learn what humanity has done, whether it's good or bad. I have a profound respect for the people that were on Earth before us and their history. I deeply love studying different civilizations and time periods, from the Ancient Greece to the World Wars. If a career in art does not work for me, I'm looking forward to become a historian.

GEEK : Yup, not shy about it. Video games, sci-fi, comics, technology... I'm currently mad in love with Game of Thrones, Star Wars and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Some may find these things "nerdy" but I just love the immersive worlds that movies and video games offers. Speaking of video games, I play a lot of different things. I'm a fan of Blizzard's and Ubisoft's works. From World of Warcraft to Civilization V on PC and from Assassin's Creed to Battlefield on the PS4.

*Honorable mention to Crash Bandicoot and Spyro, can't forget the guys I grew up with!

**MORE ABOUT ME**

I'm 19 years old and like a lot of people, I dream of a way I can make my mark on this world. I'm at a point in my life where I aspire to accomplish great things and I cannot stay in my hometown anymore. I dream of an unusual life. I can't have the same routine everyday, working from 9 to 5, 5 days a week sitting at a desk. I dream of success, but not fame. I want to inspire people through my work. A lot has happen in the last 3 years. A girl came in my life and changed the way I see it. She went her own way, and I'm now looking for mine. I've made new incredible friends when studying Cinematography and they all moved to Montreal. I need to join them and leave my old life behind. I need to start over, but before doing that, I need to spend some time with myself and that is why I am travelling alone for now. But I'm still dying to make new friends! :D

I am a very friendly, open-minded and I Love. To. Learn! Wikipedia is my jam! If, as an example, I see the name of "Genghis Khan" in some book or if I see a picture of the british Mark I Tank from the first World War, I'll spend the night reading and learning about it!

It will, again, sound like I'm bragging, but I consider myself very well educated and pretty mature for a 19 years old. I can be deep and analyse and express my feelings for a movie or for some songs' lyrics for hours, but I can also have very mature discussion about science, religions or politics.

**INTERESTING THINGS I'VE DONE**

- I did the most canadian thing ever : a beer TV Spot for one of my class where we poured maple syrup on my bestfriend's chest who is dancing in slowmotion while "Pour Some Sugar On Me" plays. I've never laughed so hard! I can show it to hosts and surfers if they ask for it :)

- I visited a still active World War II US NAVY Submarine, the USS Cod. The private tour was given by a veteran who served on this exact submarine. Incredible experience!

- At 15 years old, I lost myself in Athens, Greece, because I ran after a thief. Don't try this, didn't really enjoyed the experience :P

- I made a documentary about a drag queen.

- I traveled a lot on motorcycles with my parents when I was younger. We traveled the Province of Quebec, the east cost of the US and around the Great Lakes.

- I have a lot of stage experiences and stories to tell, some good and some bad/humiliating ones, whether it's theater, concert or hosting gala events.

- I did 30h of cycling for raising funds for cancer research. Starting at 5am and finishing at 11am the next day. Ugh, I slept for 14 hours straight after that..!

- I made a movie all by myself : acting, camera, sound, editing... It's the very personal one that I mentionned above. If I ever found myself in a deep conversation with a host or a surfer, I might show it..!

- I invite you to read the "One Amazing Thing I've Done" :)

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I want my travelling experiences to be completely unique. I don't want to sleep in hotels on an All Inclusive Vacation and see the same things that every other tourists sees. Of course, every country has its classics, you can't go to Paris without seeing the Eiffel Tower! What I mean is that by meeting with the locals, you often have the chance to see some hidden pearls, places where mass of tourists don't usually think of! And by meeting the locals, it makes you feel, for the time you're there, like you are one too..! I don't want to be labeled as a canadian tourist, but as Dominic, a couchsurfer who comes from Canada.

Plus, getting closer to the people, making new relationships with people that are, no matter what their faith, their nationality, the color of their skin or their gender is, in spite of all our differences, we are proufoundly all the same. By going toward the local population, you destroy prejudices and creates bonds and friendships with what is the heart of every country : it's people.

Music, Movies, and Books

For music, I am a huge fan of The Beatles and Green Day, but I listen to a lot of different stuff going from heavy metal like Protest the Hero to chilling music like Mac Dermaco. I also love Of Monsters and Men, The Black Keys, Three Days Grace / Saint Asonia (If you know what I mean..!), Twenty One Pilots and Red Hot Chili Peppers, just to name these bands.

For Movies, since I'm studying cinema, I've seen quite a lot of stuff! I loved "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind", "Across the Universe", "Nowhere Boy" and, "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty". I'm also a fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Harry Potter, Star Wars and Game of Thrones.

As for books, I'm almost done reading Game of Thrones! I also red the Eragon series. I prefer to read in french. Two books that I love are "Le rapport de Brodeck", by Philippe Claudel and "L'écume des jours" by Boris Vian.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Of all the movies I've made, the one that I am the most proud of is "Mr. Croteau", a 10 minute long documentary about Hermann Croteau, a 91 year old man living in my hometown. Hermann Croteau is a World War II veteran who joined the war at 18 years old and who served in the RCAF (Royal Canadian Air Force) in Britain.

It was a unique experience to make this movie with him and his wife Helene! I followed them for months and it was an incredible honor and privilege to travel back in time with them and share all their memories. We shared tears and laughters, and the movie was a gift for them, and they were a gift for me. Truly inspiring and touching persons!

I have a picture with them in my profile photos! :)

And to add more to this, "Mr. Croteau" won 3 awards at 2 different cinema festivals, and this movie's journey has just began!

Teach, Learn, Share

The main reason why I'm travelling is to learn. Learn more about the world and the people that are part of it, but also to learn more about myself before going back to Canada and starting the new life I mentionned above.

But if I want to learn, I have to meet people that can teach me! Teach me more about things I'm already familiar with and teach me completely new things!

I want to come back to Canada wiser and changed, and I hope that when I leave, my hosts are happy and full of newly acquired knowledge! :)

What I Can Share with Hosts

I offer open-minded, passionate and intelligent discussions!

I can talk and teach you alot about cinema, music and theater. For example, I can teach you the creation process of a movie during preproduction, production and postproduction, talk about how we work on a movie set, how to properly edit a movie in montage... Basicaly, teach and show you what I saw and learn during my cinematography studies! I can also share all my music/band and theater/acting experiences with you! :)

On the other side, I can teach you alot about the history and culture of Canada, but also about the completely unique culture of the francophone Province of Quebec and the unique history of French-Canadians! I have the chance to be canadian, but I'm much more than that because the province of Quebec has a complete different culture and history and works differently from the rest of Canada. Just like our ex-Prime Minister Stephen Harper said, "The Québécois form a unique nation within a united Canada" I have the best of both world and can teach you alot about both ;)

Finally, I love to talk, but I also love to hear what others have to say and absorb more of others' interests! :)
