Music, Movies, and Books
Too many. These days, Jesus' Son by Denis Johnson, anything by Michael Chabon and Lorrie Moore, Eileen Chang, Charles D'Ambrosio, Jane Austen, Salman Rushdie, Gabriel Garcia Marquez,
music: hard to keep up in Korea, so outside of K-pop, mainly girl hard rock bands, jazz and blues, and Brit pop.
movies: anything by Tim Burton, Ken Loach, and the Cohn Brothers, The City of Lost Children, Delicatessan, Ratatouille, Boys Don't Cry, Finding Neverland, The Squid and the Whale, Monty Python, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, old Woody Allen stuff (Annie Hall, Manhattan, Take the Money and Run).
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
I've seen dolphins jump out of the Caribbean Ocean ten yards away from me, eaten dog stew (I'm sorry, I'm a dog lover too, but it is a traditional Korean dish), watched Ben Kinsley perform in Waiting For Godot two aisles up for me for ten quid in London, had an ex-boyfriend once give me a pearl-handled revolver "to protect" myself when I didn't even know how to use a gun, slept in the Joshua Tree Desert under the stars and didn't even notice that it had rained, and had an elephant sneeze all over me in Thailand (I was drenched in green mucus.)
Teach, Learn, Share
hmm..I can teach you Korean and Korean contemporary culture. I've worked with North Korean refugees in South Korean and know a bit about North Korea and the lives of refugees, I'm passionate about reading and writing fiction and am the person friends call when they want to know what to read or what to see when they travel.
