ABOUT ME

I am excessively geeky and will probably end up talking too much about what I'm interested in or ask just as many questions, I apologize for this, I can't control it. I am always interested in learning from others and about different peoples and cultures as it's been a mission of sorts in my life the past few years. I vary from serious to ridiculous depending on who I'm with or what I'm doing. It's hard to provide some easy description.

PHILOSOPHY

I'm a stereotypical student of life, and believe that it should be enjoyed to the fullest extent possible. Life is a series of experiences, if we lose focus on our experiences we're confining the potential of life. I like to live in the today, but that doesn't mean I neglect the todays of tomorrow ;).

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I did couchsurfing one time and still feel like a virgin. I plan to spend my trip to Japan this winter on people's couches and get the full couchsurfing experience. It's an experiment of sorts and I hope people out there will be able to make it happen.

Anything which enriches life. I really like traveling, I'm not going to go through the effort of entering 100+ cities into their stupid map, but I've traveled to Germany, Poland, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, France, The Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Canada, Slovenia, Bosnia-Hercegovina, Serbia-Montenegro, Croatia, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Ukraine, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Laos, Hong Kong, Macau, and well China too of course, about 1/3 of it which should count for like 8 countries.

I really enjoy studying philosophy, languages, etymology, and historical linguistics, among a myriad of other things. I'm currently researching the dialects in the Wu family of Chinese, specializing in the neglected southern varieties which form one of the most linguistically heterogeneous areas in the world and preserve many of the archaic features necessary in reconstructing the ancestral language of the dialect family. I'm planning on pursuing a Ph.D. in linguistics and should hopefully begin next september.

I love books, philosophy (analytic philosophy and philosophy of mind, not much of a fan of old school wishy-washy nature of the soul philosophy), Russian, French, and English literature (especially poetry).
Most of my reading would be considered a work out to most people and it's lately been mostly in Chinese and about dialects.

I listen to any music that's tasteful, well written, or satisfies a guilty pleasure though most of it falls in the last category.

I watch obscure, esoteric foreign films (like Abuladze's Repentance or Sanatorium Under the Hour Glass), ridiculous (usually stoner) comedies (like Harold & Kumar or Super Troopers), or unnecessarily cheesy romantic movies with my g/f.

I can teach introductory guitar, piano, or violin if you happen to have any of them lying around as well as music theory/composition. I can also teach you how to speak what languages I know.

I have lots of travel stories from the awesome to the absurd and always enjoy exchanging them with others. I'm really interested in hearing about what people have to say about their travels and about life.
