About Me

CURRENT MISSION

"To seek out new life and new civilizations..." Seriously though, I love to meet new people and understand different ways of life.

ABOUT ME

Despite my suburban upbringing (or perhaps in reaction to it), I love cities. I've actually devoted my entire academic career to the study of New York. One of my field studies was a seven month, 600 mile exploration of NYC's bicycle network.

I'm a die-hard humanist which is why I love meeting people from all sorts of different places.

I love adventures; especially those bizarre happenings in everyday life which you can never expect.

Teach, Learn, Share

I study urban sustainability. This word has been overused quite a bit by environmentalists and especially politicians. Sustainability, however, is not just a synonym for "green" it encompasses solutions to social, economic and environmental problems. Often times simple changes to human behavior (as apposed to technological efficiency) can make the most difference in terms of the three factors I mentioned above. Biking, for example, is clearly very environmentally friendly. At the same time, the candid nature of this vehicle engages riders with the environment around them and protects against apathy towards poor living conditions. It also saves money! This may seem like a simple solution to a lot of problems, but the bigger issue is that of autocentrism which prevents us from thinking of something so simple as a viable alternative.
