About Me

My wife and I are active on couchsurfing, but mostly on her account:

https://www.couchsurfing.com/people/tuba-abbasi?action=show&controller=user_profiles

I’m from South Carolina in the US, but have lived in Hawaii, London, and around California. I used to be a boat captain in Hawaii, but now I work in the space industry.

I like learning about languages, world politics, and history. I’m always down in practice Spanish.

We’ve met some of the kindest, most genuine friends-for-life through couch surfing and want to continue this.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

For the insightful conversations, adventure, and laughter! I always enjoy hearing people's opinions on the politicians and political scandals of their home countries.

I like urban exploring. I’ve found my way into tunnels, a mental asylum, an abandoned airport, multiple factories, and a couple of old military installations.

Music, Movies, and Books

I like Christopher Nolan’s films, e.g. The Dark Knight series, Inception, Interstellar. I also like Westworld, which is from his brother, Jonathan Nolan. If I had to pick a favorite movie, it’s probably Forest Gump. I feel that no other film portrays so broadly the (relatively) modern American experience.

For authors, I like Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and I suspect magical realism is my favorite genre. Tied for my favorite author is Halldor Laxness. He was an Icelandic author who wrote contained, quaint stories of hard-fought, Icelandic life. I mostly read non-fiction on topics like history or politics or business.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I’ve done a few distance bicycling tours. I’ve cycled: from the USA through Mexico, Hungary to Albania, a loop through a few southern African countries, and around the perimeter of Maui. These aren’t amazing, but they are unique.

Teach, Learn, Share

I enjoy the histories of words and languages. Reading the etymologies of words and comparing meanings of related words across languages is fun for me.

What I Can Share with Hosts

If you’d like to talk and share about world politics or American domestic and foreign policy, I have worked, lived, and studied it.
