HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Former surfer, current host.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I first met a few couchsurfers through friends who hosted in Japan. When I traveled throughout Asia, I've surfed a couple of times. I've had some of those great experiences you only have when visiting with someone who lives there. I'm always amazed by the generosity people here give to strangers.

Unfortunately, I've also met sleezy people, so please don't contact me if you're using couchsurfing to creep.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I'm struck by the total and complete generosity I have received living in northern Japan. One of my favorite memories was dinner with the Japanese family of one of my students whose parents had lived throughout the middle east. Persian rugs hung from the walls next to family photos of their grinning sons in school uniforms, we ate kebab with chopsticks and I never saw the bottom of my glass in the struggle for who could pour the other person's drink first. The stories went well into the night as we covered everything from our families to politics to history and all the other controversial topics usually avoided in Japanese society. At the end of the night, my friend and I left stumbling, laughing, and crying as everyone promised to never forget each other.
