About Me

ABOUT ME

I'd say my main interests (outside of my course) are music, sport, and MUSIC AGAIN. I play drums in an afrobeat/noise rock/soukous band, and lead my university's samba band - and at the moment have to put up with keeping art as a hobby; illustrating for a local zine and doing the odd life-drawing.

I'm involved in organising events for festivals in Sheffield, mainly centred around electronic music, participatory music, and community music and arts workshops. Generally very involved in the Sheffield independent arts scene which I'm very passionate about!

I've travelled a fair bit and find it massively refreshing, stimulating and down-right enjoyable. I won't list a bunch of positive, awkward adjectives to 'describe' my personality here; you'll no doubt find out what I'm like when we cross couches; indeed I hope we will cross couches some time soon.

Music, Movies, and Books

Musically, I'm really into African music in a very broad sense (from Shangaan electro to West African blues to soukous and back again), jazz, hip-hop and electronic music, bossa-nova, samba, while my favourite band at the moment is Dirty Projectors; pretty varied. I'm interested in all music, but I suppose if I had to isolate one factor I loved, it say it was de riddim.

Recently enjoyed: Any Human Heart by William Boyd, Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad, What A Carve Up! by Jonathan Coe, The Age of Reason by Jean-Paul Satre, lots of Nick Hornby, and generally books that are either very dry-humoured, or politically/philosophically/psychologically slanted.

Films: Hidden, A Prophet, Waking Life, Dogtooth, Plan 9 From Outer Space, The Sixth Sense and The Hurt Locker, Amores Perros/21 Grams.
Though I recently realised that I don't really enjoy watching films on my own, it somehow feels like an inefficient use of time, but I love good films (paradoxically?), and really enjoy watching films with others for sure.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Buying a second-hand Honda Supercub and driving 1000km up Vietnam along the Ho Chi Minh trail.

Also, researching the political role of music in Dakar, Senegal, through interviewing key rappers in the scene, learning djembe and seeing as much live music as possible while there.

Countries I’ve Visited

Belgium, Cambodia, China, Croatia, Egypt, France, Germany, Laos, Morocco, Netherlands, Senegal, Spain, Thailand, United States, Viet Nam

Countries I’ve Lived In
