About Me
CURRENT MISSION
Making biogas and solar power an affordable solution for developing world farmers
ABOUT ME
I'm starting up a social enterprise called Shamba Technologies, based in Tanzania. We are trying to develop affordable technology for low income farmers. I've just moved to Shanghai where we're going to try manufacture some of this stuff!
PHILOSOPHY
I haven't spent enough time thinking about life to have developed my own philosophy (maybe when I'm older), so until I do I'm happy to take snippets off other people's. Here's a couple of quotes which I think give an idea of how I approach life:
"Experience is not what happens to a man; it is what a man does with what happens to him." - Aldous Huxley 1932
"Reality is just that part of the imagination that we all agree on." - Anonymous
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING
I used to take in a few people when I lived in Tanzania - but now our apartment is so small here in Shanghai we'll probably have to put that on hold for a while!
COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE
All sorts - all great.
Interests
Music, sports (football, rugby, swimming, cycling, windsurf, etc...), making stuff - especially with electronics. Partying! Lots of stuff.

Music, Movies, and Books
I'm an avid listener, and a slow but enthusiastic reader. Always keen to swap some mp3s.
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
Hmmm... I once found myself swimming in the sea close to our house in a massive tropical lightning storm. It was pretty epic. Amongst other things there were phosphorescent plankton that created bright glowing sparkles as you swam, and there was a full moon that occasionally peaked through the clouds and made a moon-bow... yeah right, I didn't think they existed either.
Teach, Learn, Share
My passion is using appropriate technologies for international development - whatever that may mean. Basically I've got a bit of experience with small scale wind turbines, hydro turbines, biodigesters and solar powered LED lights, that I'm trying to create sustainable social enterprises out of in East Africa. Business models for developing countries, carbon credit mechanisms, and advanced fluid mechanics - for all these things I could be a teacher to some and an eager student to most.
