About Me

CURRENT MISSION

To fully experience and appreciate the present moment

ABOUT ME

After living in New York City since 1980, I moved to California in 2003 to begin my third career, this time as a product designer, and teacher (of design and animation). Before that I was a researcher in computer graphics and virtual environments, and before that I was an animation camera operator.

I enjoy teaching, and feel very fortunate to have a job that is primarily about helping others grow. It also gives me time to pursue my own work, which currently involves creating organically inspired cellular and kinetic structures, as well as more practical devices for storage and kitchen (see photos and my website: www.JohnEdmark.com). I enjoy living on a university campus where I have access to all kinds of interesting people and events.

PHILOSOPHY

Do unto others as you'd have them do unto you.

Interests

I started pursuing ultra-light backpacking in 2006, and have enjoyed a number of adventures in the High Sierra, the Cascades and the Olympic mountains over the past several summers.

I have been making stereo (3-d) photograph since 1991, and have focused on hyper-stereo photographs since 1999. Hyper-stereo photos are created by putting the two cameras further apart than the distance between human eyes--sometimes as much as 300 feet apart! The result is an image that has a greatly increase sense of depth. I posted a few images here in the folder "Hyperstereo Photos". You can view them by crossing your eyes. Unfortunately, they're very small, but they give you the general idea.

I've recently taken up contra dancing and English Country dancing.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Climbing to the top of Half-Dome in Yosemite.
Falling asleep on the very top of a 10,000 foot peak in the High Sierra, without a tent, a perfectly clear moonless night punctuated by shooting stars.
