About Me

I'm a classic introvert. A bit shy and reserved around people at first, however I become a good friend once I get to know people better.

I've spent almost all my life in my home country of New Zealand. This year I decided to take a break from working and travel to China to learn Chinese - something I've always wanted to do. I hope that once I finish studying I can continue to live and work in China.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

Two reasons.

Firstly, I am interested in fairly the recent notion of the "sharing economy" and couch surfing seems to me to represent the "sharing economy" in the truest sense of the word "sharing" (i.e. providing good/services on a gratitude-only basis).

Secondly, on a more personal note, I see couch surfing as an interesting way to meet new people and develop friendships.

Interests

From my response to "Why I'm on Couchsurfing" you can probably tell that I'm an intellectual/academically-inclined person.

I have an interest in business and in particular businesses that do interesting things and have a positive impact on society.

I love music, in particular electronic/dance music. When I was younger I did a bit of DJing. I still enjoy raves and clubbing however these days I do find it hard to stay up all night.

I also really love watching good movies and TV series and reading good books (see next section).

Music, Movies, and Books

Music
Cowgirl by Underworld is my all-time favourite tune. In addition to Underworld I also love the early works by The Chemical Brothers, Fatboy Slim and The Prodigy.

When I was DJing (many years ago) I was playing progressive house/trance, UK hard techno, UK hard house and hard trance and hardcore (I must admit having a soft spot for cheesy happy hardcore).

I do find some of today's "EDM" tunes pretty banging however I also think there is a lot of rubbish out there...

Movies/TV
I'm a Leonardo DiCaprio fan. I've enjoyed many of his movies, especially his most recent ones. More generally I am a fan of dramas, in particular those based on true stories/events. Titles that come to mind include Dallas Buyers Club, American Hustle and Fury.

I also love stupid-humour comedy, e.g. 21/22 Jump Street, Seth Rogan movies, Family Guy, South Park, Robot Chicken, etc.

Books
Due to my interest in business I've read a lot of books by Ben Mezrich and Michael Lewis. Mezrich's books re-tell the stories of people who have been extraordinarily successful (e.g. Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook). Lewis has written several books exposing the culture and practices of the financial industry.

I read mostly non-fiction however I still enjoy fiction. Classics are my favourite fiction.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

When I was in high school I won a local DJing competition. My mixing skills were not very good at the time however the judges said that I was the only DJ to actually get people dancing (which is the whole point of DJing, right?). At the peak of my set I played a remix of my favourite tune "Cowgirl" mentioned above. It was an awesome feeling to play the music I love at the right moment and seeing the crowd really enjoy it.

Teach, Learn, Share

If you are studying business at university or just starting out a career in business then I can definitely listen to any worries or anxieties you may have and share with you my own career experiences and perhaps offer advice.

Likewise I am keen to hear and learn from others' life experiences, in particular from those people who have done interesting things that they are passionate about.

What I Can Share with Hosts

I am a very considerate person and if I was hosted then I would do my upmost to respect and be grateful for the hospitality provided. If I had a positive experience then I would definitely want to reciprocate in the future.
