ABOUT ME
Hi, I'm Bowen! I grew up in California, moved to Portland Oregon, then went to Bolivia. I was in South and Central America for a while and came back to the US. Now I live in New Orleans.
I like to trade good books, learn new recipes, and talk with interesting people. Hablo español y me gustaría ejercerlo para evitar perderlo. Si quieres practicar enviame un mensaje!
PHILOSOPHY
I try to treat everyone as a friend and equal, and take responsibility for the connections between my actions and the world. So I'm vegan and I don't drive or fly.
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE
I started using the website in Bolivia, where I stayed at Massimo's social experiment in La Paz for a month... ten to fifteen people on the floor every night. Stayed with María in Buenos Aires for a week and a half, went back to La Paz for a couple days, then didn't couchsurf again until I quit my job in Guatemala three months later and stayed with Minerva in Guadalajara and Forest in San Diego. Surfed in Seattle, Memphis, and New Orleans, where we later hosted a lot of people but usually not through the site.
Interests
Rhetoric, economics, science fiction and western literature, the structures that generate subjectivity, modern speculative metaphysics, and daily skills and knowledge like cooking, sewing, bikes, and what I should have in my backpack.

Music, Movies, and Books
My favorite movie is Repo Man! I'm really excited about the sequel, let me know if you can help me find a copy.
I like postpunk, pop, weird experimental sounds, good songwriting, and dance music... Maybe a band like Scritti Politti managed to be all four, on their early stuff?
I read a lot of books. Traveling makes it harder to find the specific ones I'd like to read, but at home I mostly like criticism, comic books, and experimental science fiction. My favorite author is Samuel Delany.
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
I spent five days on boats between towns in the Kuna Yala, and I realized that nothing you get by paying for it is amazing to me. This is why my favorite things are clouds and vacant lots, and why I'll never go to Burning Man. Maybe it's also why I'm on couchsurfing.
Teach, Learn, Share
My Spanish is worse than it was, but it's still pretty good; I can help you with it. I studied linguistics in college, so I understand principles of grammar and syntax and I'd be happy to explain almost anything about the english language to you.
I'm good at fixing bicycles and clothes. I have a clear but basic understanding of economic theories and how finance works. If you want to know about science fiction or alternative comics then I'd be happy to talk your ear off.
