About Me

CURRENT MISSION

..

ABOUT ME

This is a very difficult question.. :P It is hard to find the words to describe oneself objectively and cope with this unavoidable conflict of interest. Well, anyway, I will try now to write a couple of lines as honestly as possible.
Let's start with some brief data. I am an Italian guy, born in Milan and raised in a small city not far from my birthplace. I studied in a high school specialized in humanistic studies and then I switched to a scientific university. I studied Computer Engineering in Politecnico di Milano, spent one year as an exchange student in University College of London and took part in an internship in Japan. Now I am studying to get a Master in Mathematics and Foundations of Computer Science.
Speaking of my character, this is definitely more difficult.. Let's say that since every choice can be judged from different points of view and various opposite adjectives can be attached to the same action, I will try to tell you what I like to do and not who I think I am. In general I am a guy who prefer listening to talking, traveling to staying still,
spending time with friends to traveling, discussing to chatting, exploiting my time to letting it pass, staying silent to speaking inappropriate words, walking aimlessly to following a path, smiling to complaining, laughing to swearing, forgiving to remembering, sharing to teaching, sharing to exploiting, dreaming to planning, remembering to forgetting, thinking to laughing, thanking to forgetting, improvising to living out of fixed habits, being attached to my old stuff to getting new things, asking questions to talking about myself, caring about the meaning to worrying about the form, acting ethically to acting conveniently, hiking on a mountain to walking in a city, reading a good book to partying.

PHILOSOPHY

This is another difficult question.. I would like to be able to summarize my philosophy in just one striking deep sentence, but any of them would not be enough to express my ideas..
Let's say my philosophy is a work in progress.. This sounds a bit.. skeptical.. well, this is probably a label not so far from the reality.. After all, I know this sounds repetitive, but it is exactly this acknowledgement of the limits of my understanding that fuels my drive to learn and to meet new people in order to get new insights on the world.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I found out CS about serendipitously, while surfing the web and reading posts. As soon as I read about it, I decided to sign up on the website. Unfortunately I was very fast in registering but it took me a very long time just to add my personal details and getting involved. But recently I am trying to catch up with the lost time! ;)

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Despite my early signing up in CouchSurfing, I have limited experience in surfing or hosting within the community. I registered on the website as soon as I found out about this interesting project, but it took my some time before starting using it. I used it while travelling in Iceland first, and then while interrailing through Europe. Everytime it was really an extraordinary experience, a unique gift, something which added a lot to all my journeys; meeting people in the places where you are travelling, sharing with them ideas and impressions was always really enriching. I really hope to be able to use CS more and more in the future!

Interests

Reading. I spend quite a good amount of my time reading; I like reading books about philosophy, history, geopolitics, biographies and essays.
Programming. as a computer scientist, I use to spend some time programming and working on my personal projects. I like trying new programming languages or making my ideas work on my computer.
Roleplaying Games. I am a passionate player of pen-and-paper roleplaying games (Dungeons and Dragons, World of Darkness, Call of Cthulhu); I love spending my spare time with friends playing this type of games.
Football. As for many Italians, football and, in particular, 5-a-side football are my favorite sports.
Drawing/Writing. Sometimes I like to indulge in some kind of artistic activity like writing or drawing; but don't take it too seriously: I am just a dilettante who enjoys spending his time in this way but whose results are anything but artistic. :)

Music, Movies, and Books

Should I choose one movie, I would choose 'Into the Wild' by Sean Penn. Beside it, I like movies like Ciudade de Deus, The New World, Sirta La Gal Ba, Tropa de Elite, Lords of Dogtown, Letters from Iwo Jima, In This World, Il Mestiere delle Armi or Diarios de Motocicletas.
Should I choose one song, I will choose 'A Question of Heaven' by Iced Earth; beside it, I like groups like Blind Guardian, Ensiferum, Sigur Ros, Alcest, Falkenbach or Shadow Gallery
Should I choose one book, I will choose 'Memoirs of Hadrian' by Marguerite Yourcenar; beside it I like books like Shake Hands with Devil, On The Road, Ficciones, De Rerum Natura, Mishima on Hagakure or The Lord of the Rings.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Sitting in an abandoned construction site in Akureyri and admiring the sun lazily leaning on the horizon at midnight and refusing to set.. Getting to the top of Ben Nevis with my friends, without training, without planning, only with enthusiasm, and celebrating this feat, half-dead, with sandwiches and coke.. Gazing at the stars on a lonely beach in Cornwall.. Waiting for the sunrise from the crowded top of Mount Fuji after a cold night spent making the way to the summit..
Well.. I have an endless collections of amazing memories I am so fond of I would for sure bore you.. :)

Teach, Learn, Share

I really love the idea behind CouchSurfing about meeting fellow travelers and share with them knowledge and experiences. Remembering and listening past experiences about journeys and travels is always a unique and enriching experience!
I consider myself a patient, even if not very skilled, teacher and whenever I can help someone, I am more than happy to do so. If you like languages and would like practice a little bit of Italian, I would be very glad to do it. Moreover, being a computer engineer, I am fairly competent in informatics; so if you would like to learn something more about the world of computers, it would be my pleasure to talk about it.
On the other side, I deem myself an eager and versatile student and I hardly find something I am not interested in. I could listen with interest (and take part in the discussion, if my competences allow it) to people talking about literature, languages, politics, history, science, philosophy, religion, computer science, arts.. I firmly believe that you can always learn something meaningful from everyone.
