I learn best from conversations, and proud to have a memory of an elephant. Over the past few years, I have been collecting my favorite quotes from people I met from Couchsurfing. The following are not verbatim quotes, but surely capture the gist of what they told me. I thank them for these words of wisdom.

My best friends see in me conflicting characteristics. I am practical and mature, yet dotty about films and novels with utopian and even saccharine endings.

My classmates would describe me as heavy-set (compared to them) and even homely, hysterical, headstrong, yet a little hidebound.

My younger friends, mostly my students, find me hawk-eyed and hard-headed.

In the eyes of older friends, I would be thought of as honest-to-goodness, humorous and helpful.
