About Me

CURRENT MISSION
Enjoy life. Mission status: successful.

ABOUT ME
Hi, I'm Lizzy. I grew up in a small town in western North Carolina, in the beautiful Great Smoky Mountains. I've also lived in Tunisia, the little North African country between Algeria and Libya where the Arab Spring started. I spent 8 months in Amsterdam where I fell in love with the city, the mix of cultures, and the variety of people.
I'm currently serving with AmeriCorps NCCC. It's a government national and community service program. Since joining, I've learned how to work in a food pantry, taught kids about ecology, archery, leadership, orienteering, engineering, and more, dug more holes than Stanley Yelnats, and accidentally weed-whacked weed on April 20th.
I like to think I'm a pretty well-rounded person. Third culture kid life does that to you if you let it.

PHILOSOPHY
Go with the flow; the flow knows its shit.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

In Amsterdam, I was meeting people from all over the world every single day. I miss the fun times and interesting conversations that come with cross cultural relationships. And let's be real--who wants to stay at a boring, soul-less hotel when you could be making friends with awesome people?

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE
None as of yet, but looking forward to it!

Music, Movies, and Books

I like listening to indie/alt rock, R&B, hip hop, and sometimes pop. Best concert I've ever been to: Tame Impala. My favorite bands/artists include the Strokes, Arctic Monkeys, Alt-J, Lana Del Rey, Cage the Elephant, The Black Keys, Frank Ocean, the Growlers, Arcade Fire, the Wombats, the Killers, Hozier, Neutral Milk Hotel, Phoenix, City and Colour, Vampire Weekend, Foster the People, Kendrick Lamar, Childish Gambino, Walk the Moon, Glass Animals, the Shins...somebody stop me this is getting out of hand.

Favorite books are the His Dark Materials series and A Song of Ice and Fire. I hate admitting to this, but I lost the habit of reading. I'm trying to get back into it though!
Update: LIBRARY CARDS ARE FUCKING DOPE. I've been reading ALL THE BOOKS! I have a newly discovered love of poetry. Let the Great World Spin is a new favorite to add to the list.

It's hard for me to be specific with movies, but I'm a sucker for anything artsy or beautifully shot. Gimme that good cinematography! I mostly like indie movies, comedies, thrillers, documentaries, and 80's movies.

I have tons of specific TV shows though! Some favorites are Sense8, Game of Thrones, Orange is the New Black, Orphan Black, Firefly, Community, Parks & Rec, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Daredevil, Agent Carter, Stranger Things, Friends, Survivor, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Bob's Burgers...the list goes on. Anything interests me as long as the characters are complex and well-developed, and there needs to be some humor in it!

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

During the Arab Spring, I got to volunteer at a several different refugee camps in Tunisia where people were fleeing Libya due to how violent the uprising was. Some were so close to the border that while trying to give a little hope in the form of balloon animals and face-painting, you could still hear machine guns in the distance.

Teach, Learn, Share

I can teach you some Tunisian Arabic, how to cook a bomb-ass stir-fry, or how to play your favorite song on the uke. I'm willing to learn anything you have to share. I'm learning Spanish, so conversation practice would be awesome if you speak it! Also, music theory confuses me. Pls, musically gifted people, help me understand this beautiful thing!

What I Can Share with Hosts

My fabulous sense of humor, conversation over coffee or tea, or a peaceful presence.
