About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Connect, learn, grow, experience, eat some good food.

ABOUT ME

I am excited about the world, the good people in it, and what they have to say and need to do.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

A few meetups, both fun and full of engaging, interesting people.
I surfed with in Paris with Maria and had a wonderful experience with her!

Interests

I study linguistics, especially the way people interact with language and one another via the medium of words, and particularly within the context of less-spoken, indigenous languages. I love to read, watch movies, experience music and art--any concentrated glimpse into the human condition. I'm a vegan and I love to cook--it's probably my main "hobby," and the thing to which I most dedicate my extracurricular passions. Food in general gives me great joy! I love to talk to people with experience and things to say about it--travel is a great way to do that, and I can't imagine not doing it on a regular basis. I also like to go to museums of all kinds, learn about art, garden, read, hike, do yoga, bike, take photos, paint, write, and wear pretty vintage clothes.

Music, Movies, and Books

Things by Ingmar Bergman, Woody Allen, Pedro Almodovar, David Lynch, John Cassavetes, Alfred Hitchcock, Michael Haneke. Solaris, The Conversation, 8 1/2, Mind Game, The Big Sleep, Once Upon a Time in the West.

David Foster Wallace, MFK Fisher, Philip Roth, Farewell My Lovely, The Long Goodbye, Jimmy Corrigan: Smartest Kid on Earth, The Castle, Lady Chatterly's Lover, A Personal Matter, Maus, Blind Willow Sleeping Woman, many more! I read about food a lot. I like reading about bodies and the amazing things they do ("gross" is not in my lexicon), especially different states of consciousness and human sexuality (Dan Savage had a formative role in my adolescence), and neat sciencey things (though I try not to get too pop about it).

Live music! Joni Mitchell, Brian Eno, Yo La Tengo, the Mountain Goats, Stereolab, Boards of Canada, Cocteau Twins, Talking Heads, Flying Lotus, Fleetwood Mac, Andrew Bird, Slowdive, My Bloody Valentine, Thelonious Monk, jazz in general (trying to learn more).

Freaks and Geeks, Mad Men, Arrested Development, Twin Peaks. I don't "watch" TV but it's not something I'm necessarily proud of--I'm kind of pop-culture illiterate sometimes.

Boggle > Scrabble.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

- Fresh in my memory is seeing the clouds hurtle in off the ocean and into the mountains, enveloping us as we stood atop a peak, in the Picos de Europa, Spain.
- Seeing the entire Milky Way in the isolated dark of a Costa Rican sky, and a sea turtle lay her eggs beneath that sky.
- Honestly, experiencing love in small and large ways with my friends, family, new acquaintances, and strangers can be the most enthralling thing of all.

Teach, Learn, Share

I can teach you:
- Cooking skills
- English and Spanish (the latter to a certain extent!)
- Linguisticky knowledge. Will write things in the IPA for spare change.
- Yoga! I've taught groups of friends and found that I sort of love it.
