One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

visited ireland.

Egypt Part I
5:30am: Dogs barking, a daily territorial fight, my ears (and my sleep) none the better for it.

5:45am: The fives-times-a-day prayer, blasted through speakers from the mosque, of which I am a stone throw away. I look for one under my bed, but none is to be found.

8:00am: My eyes open, my back ache, what am I to do? a book you say? no, it is quiet now, time for some sleep.

10:00am: Hunger strikes, up on my feet I go, a look through the window, two dogs sleeping, I let out a bark, but to no avail. alas

12:00pm: Time for a walk, time for a stroll, time to take a taxi to town, price fiercely negotiated. Five EP (egyptian pounds) is the stake, vital to me, vital to him. I win. One USD in my pockets.

1:00pm: A street, traffic at its worse, my destination is the other side, a step, so many more are needed, exhaust covers me, horns blaring, what a beautiful Cairo symphony!

2:00pm: So much history, this egyptian antiquities, the best of egypt's museum.

3:00pm: A metro ride later, to giza and the pyramids, yet still so far, which bus will lead me there? 25 piastres later, 5 cents to you all, an idea comes to mind, sardines in a metal box, is that hunger? ahh no, it is me, tightly squeezed, in this metal bus.

3:55pm: 25 EP for student entry to giza pyramids, sorry sir, it is now closed, 4pm is the time, my shoulders up in a shrug, face saddened, he lets me in. Like nothing else, my eyes lay upon the pyramids, a chill down my spine, my mind in overdrive for some historical perspective, yet awe is the only answer.

6:00pm: The ride back home, so far away, a foreigner in a foreign land, people stare, kids say hello, I smile back, they shy away, oh yes, the bus again, this time 50 piastres, a big 10 cents, if math is a problem to you, images of sardines pop back into my mind, where is my exit?

7:00pm: Time for fierce negotiating again, the cabs plentiful, the price should be nice, three dollars later, or an hour if you like, back to my dad's, time to eat.

12:00am: The dogs bark again, am I to awake?

Egypt Part II
with that said, imagine climbing a mountain at midnight with only your cell phone light to guide you.. never mind that the cell phone's batteries are dying.. finally, after four hours of a bone-chilling trek, you drink some whiskey to warm you up while waiting for the sun to rise.. you're surrounded by 200-300+ travelers just like you who have made the trek up on christmas morning, yet you feel like you're by yourself, alone with your thoughts, as if you're the first and last one to see this beautiful sun ascending from behind the distant mountains.. only you realize that moses, some thousand years before, had made that same journey on this little, remote mountain in the sinai peninsula.. a mountain called mount sinai. give me more whiskey.
