About Me

I quit my job at a law firm a bit ago and now I am working as a long distance touring bike guide in Alaska. When I’m not doing that I’m either running, skiing, pack rafting or playing music. I'm flying to Switzerland to do an ultramarathon in the alps. Very stoked for this trip!!

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I love love love to meet people, experience new ideas and schools of thought.

Interests

I am an ultra runner. I love to push my self to the
absolute limit. Music is one of my passions. I believe it is the meaning of life. Our bodies and universe are made up of strings that resonate to produce the song that we live in. I love this band, what song is this?

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I was on an island in remote Indonesia called Morotai. My friend and I, on a whim, were attempting to circumnavigate the entire island in one day by scooter. Not some off road scooter or anything. A dinky little street scooter with both of our 40 lbs packs on it. The islands terrain is characterized by large mountains covered with a dense jungle. The roads we were traveling on were absolutely abysmal and extremely dangerous considering no one has a licence on the island and the roads are very narrow. (Three people died on the road we were traveling during our time there. We crashed twice, ended up ok though.) It seemed the further we traveled, the road just kept getting more and more terrible. We started doing having to do river crossings with our scooter and packs every few miles. It was like the fuckin Oregon Trail. Eventually our scooter quits so we ditch it in the woods and continue on foot. The road is now just a small game trail in the jungle. Night is rapidly approaching and my leg is fucked up from the crash that happened earlier in the day, nothing too terrible, just a bit of road rash. If you haven't figured it out yet, my friend and I aren't the smartest people, we kind of just survive on luck. At this point we are just wandering through the jungle at night, very hungry and tired; worst of all, fear is setting in. We are very far away from pretty much anything. As we continue to aimlessly wander we hear what sounds like an aircraft engine starting up in the distance. So naturally we follow it. As we got closer we realize the noise is waves crashing on the shore. We were still intrigued, the beach could offer a suitable place to sleep for the night. As we get to the tree line we see a glow. The waves, with each crash, were pulsing a vibrant blue color. At that moment we feel relief. We look to the horizon and find comfort in the fact that our home is some 6,000 miles across the ocean where we are looking. (we're from Alaska, I originally come from Kansas though.) As we take this moment in, we hear a noise from the tree line. A group of villagers emerges, hauling coconuts. They come over to us and greet us joyfully, offering us coconuts. I'm sure they were very confused as to what we were doing there. They spoke no english and my brain was too shot to translate Indonesian. Eventually they just say the name Miles Teller. They lead us through the jungle for a few minutes to these group of huts, gesturing for us to sleep in them. We wake up the next morning to a beautiful sunrise and the sound of an American speaking Indonesian. I walk outside and it's my old buddy Miles from El Dorado, Kansas.
