About Me

Moin! (That's a seagull noise North Germans appropriated and use as a friendly greeting)

My name is Enrique, I come from Mexico and I've been studying in Germany for the last three years. I am currently doing a gap year between graduating from my bachelor's and getting into a master's or a job or whatever follows next, so doing internships around Germany and using weekends off to discover other bits of Europe.
Before moving to Germany I was in Singapore for two years and got to travel around South East Asia, where, as most backpackers I discovered a passion for sleeping in unusual places and listening to the stories of other travelers.
I've also worked part time in all kinds of restaurants during the last.. I guess 8 years: Irish Pubs, Mexican restaurants, German bistros, Indian ready-made home delivery and most recently a sushi shop in Frankfurt!
Although I left Mexico to study, working in the service industry has been key in shaping my experience as a traveler and getting to understand the difference of reasons for people to move from one place to another.
So yeah, in that sense, I love stories of travels and holidays, but I also love stories about migration and, as of late, people's reasons to stay in a certain place.
I am also a pretty adaptable person. I am rather quick at picking up languages and getting the hang of the cities I visit in terms of directions. I like to think it is one of those skills necessary for when the oil runs out! (that and being able to walk long distances...)
Also, I've been studying in international environments for the last five years so my sense of humour is an odd mix of political satire, idealistic, environmentalist jokes and many other topics that my grandma wouldn't be too happy to hear about at the dinner table. (That being said, my grandma was pretty cool, taught me about social inequality, valuing education, being humble and was a staunch defender of people's right to freely choose whom to love)
Oh! I like reading and writing, I mainly did poetry and currently putting together a sporadic collection of episodes that would eventually make a whole coherent book.
I am also rather hyper and enjoy dancing, games nights, outdoor sports, walks and I am quite keen on housework. This includes cooking, but I guess that comes in the "what I can offer hosts section".

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

Apart from what I wrote above, many friends told me really cool stories about all the people they've met through couch surfing. One of my close friends I actually met through a couch-surfer friend and hey, one should really make the best of any opportunity to widen his/her/their perspectives!

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I finished the Hamburg Marathon in 3:46 Hours, my first ever, after having slept only 3 hours because my boss from the restaurant I was working at needed someone last minute for a special event. Actually.. it was kinda stupid but my team was counting on me so I couldn't back out last minute. I think the best bit of it was the feeling of camaraderie between the runners, more than anything, that's what kept us all going.

I can cook, will cook, gladly! I am also, oddly enough quite keen on taking care of the dishes after a big meal.
I can make pinhatas too if that helps... pinhatas and braiding hair?
