About Me

I'm Eric! I grew up in Hawaii, moved to Idaho, and since graduating high school I've lived in Colorado, Montana, and Illinois either working or going to school.

I guess I'm a college drop out. My adventurous spirit just hasn't been able to stay put in one place for more than a year. Plus, I'd rather be a writer/photographer than anything else, and you don't need a fancy college degree to do either.

I very recently moved back to Hawaii. I spend my days working or at the beach, or hiking.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

My parents joined several years ago while I was in college. They've hosted several people at the house over the past 5 years. I got to meet some really cool people and hear some amazing stories during the times I was also staying at home.

I've also used couch surfing to travel with them. In 2010 we couch surfed as a family in Whistler, B.C. and in Vancouver. Last winter I came home for the holidays and we traveled again as a family to Whitefish, MT and stayed with a couchsurfer.

I've also used couch surfing myself, spending a weekend in Seaside, OR back in 2012 and in Nelson, B.C. in Jan of 2015. Now that I've moved to Hawaii, I want to open my home to guests. I also plan on traveling more, during which I will rely on couchsurfing.

I've heard wonderful couchsurfing stories from many of the guests my parents had, as well as from those who have hosted me. My philosophy on travel is that its best to learn from the locals, and couchsurfing provides a great opportunity to learn from people who really know the area. Plus, I love meeting all the different types of people out there, and other adventurous souls like myself!

Interests

I'm a very active person. I enjoy climbing, longboarding, surfing, hiking, running, SUPing, kayaking, boating, playing sand volleyball, biking, fishing, disc golfing, etc. I also practice yoga.

I love the outdoors. When the weather is nice you will rarely catch me inside.

In the winter I've been a very avid skier and snowboarder. This winter I will be charging the famous North Shore waves on a surfboard

I also enjoy cooking, playing aggressively mediocre guitar, ukulele, and piano, writing, photography, reading, watching Netflix, and so on.

I'm the type that's pretty much up for anything!

Music, Movies, and Books

I enjoy nearly all types of music, it just depends on what I'm doing/what mood I'm in! I listen to a wide variety of genres.

As for movies, my favorites include Harry Potter, Star Wars, LOTR, Pitch Perfect, Out Cold, The Art of Flight, and Blood Diamond. Again, I appreciate a wide variety of genres.

My Favorite books are the Harry Potter Series, LOTR, The Hobbit, and You Shall Know Our Velocity.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Taught a deaf woman from Austria to snowboard once. I was teaching snowboarding in Breckenridge, and she and her friend came for a lesson. Her friend was supposed to be her translator, but had altitude sickness and so could not partake in the lesson. I know very little sign language, and she wasn't the best at reading lips in English, but she could read lips in German and I used my very limited German vocabulary. Very rewarding experience when I was able to make her smile and give her a great snowboarding experience.

Teach, Learn, Share

One of the things I love about travel is the opportunity to learn about the world and the different people in it first hand. I look forward to all the different stories I will hear and all the different experiences I will have! Then, I can take these stories to tell others!

I want to learn more about traveling from others who have done it. I'm also looking forward to sharing experiences with people.
