About Me

First and foremost, I'm a happily married father of 5. I spent about 10 years as a nursing assistant after dropping out of high school at age 15. I went back to school about 5 years ago, earned my bachelor's in biology and chemistry from VCU, and was recently accepted to the VCU school of medicine (beginning mid August). I spend a lot of my time these days volunteering at Crossover (a free clinic) and the Healing Place (a homeless shelter for men with substance abuse history).

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I'm looking for a little adventure before my life is consumed by medical school. "Vacationing" doesn't do it for me (plus I'm poor lol). I want to LIVE in a new place for a bit, soak up the culture, and just get a feel for what life is like in an unfamiliar place. I'm also genuinely interested in the other humans sharing this awesome planet with me. I think that sharing living space with another person is a unique privilege. I just want to have a authentic experience. Learn a bit, grow a bit... you know... something real.

Interests

Anything medical, science, archery, movies, sailing, exploring, hiking, doing anything dangerous, doing things I've never done before.

Music, Movies, and Books

Music - classic rock, 80's and 90's (nostalgia), Nirvana, Pearl Jam, classical, opera, BLUES IS THE BEST - but honestly, I dig most music
Movies - Texas Buyers Club, The Watchmen, Starman
Books - Fantasy and Sci-fi, On the Road, Zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I worked with disabled children at Camp Easter Seals East for two summers. This experience changed the way I look at the world and catalyzed my devotion to medicine.

Teach, Learn, Share

I'm VERY open willing to learn. I'm a great listener. I'm interested in anything a host can share with me, particularly regarding local culture, lifestyle, and personal experiences. I can teach EKG interpretation to someone with no medical background, and I know a little something about parenting, marriage, and how to build a happy, purposeful life (even after screwing it up for years the way I did lol).

What I Can Share with Hosts

I'll do whatever I can to help. From chores around the house to assisting you at work. I'm honestly interested in what your life is like so I'm up for whatever :)
