About Me

Former itinerant scholar who's resumed roaming the world as he’s able. Most often in Boston, New York, San Francisco, and a tiny town in Switzerland— with many random stops between.

As long as there are interesting people, interesting books, or interesting projects in my life I’m very happy — so I’m almost always pretty happy. ;)

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

Sad truth: Freedom can be resource constrained. :/

Happy truth: Sharing (time, space, friendship) makes a lot of the world available that otherwise wouldn't be. :)

In most places in the world I've travelled I have friends (one of the draws of traveling for me :), but it's always nice to (A) make friends with people you wouldn't otherwise meet and (B) have new places to explore.

Music, Movies, and Books

...make for better conversations than lists.

But, here're three pair+ that are up there:

Books: Vehicles: Experiments in Synthetic Psychology & The Things They Carried & The Last Samurai (not about "samurai")

Movies: Harold and Maud & Antonia's Line

Musicians: Ryoji Ikeda & Cut Chemist & Elizabeth Cotten

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Conferred at AI ethics conference in farmlands of Germany.

(Actually, all the most amazing things I've done involve unique experiences with individuals or new ideas discovered; but those sorts of experiences just don't translate to a couple lines of text as easily. ;)

Teach, Learn, Share

Jack of all trades, master of some.

Neuroscientist by training, with a penchant for all the hard sciences and maths and an abiding in interest in most of the rest of academia.

Sometimes personal trainer with a well researched and (I dare say) decently lived perspective on nutrition and exercise.

Advanced Brazillian Jiu Jitsu (like Judo) player and used to coach submission grappling for the MIT MMA club.

Love to learn essentially anything. :)

What I Can Share with Hosts

A laugh, a smile, a hug. Or many of the aforementioned. :)

Also happy to help anyone with nutritional or exercise goals, put together a plan, or consult on the brain or related sciences for the curious.
