Hi,

I’m Evan, I’m 25 and I’m from the East of England.

I currently work in research and development in the plastics industry, but I am looking to change career soon and I'm interested in the renewable energy sector and teaching in particular. I studied Physics and Astronomy at the University of Southampton, and studied Type Ia Supernovae for my Masters' dissertation.

Music is one of my major hobbies and interests, and whilst at university I enjoyed contributing as a music writer and editor for the campus magazine and was involved with the student radio station. I'm an avid fan of live music and really enjoy going to as many gigs as possible.

I like playing and watching football (soccer!), and support my local team (Norwich City). I also enjoy cycling, rock climbing and running, and have a casual interest in NFL (Denver Broncos).

In the rest of my spare time, I like to visit new places, go for walks or just chill out at home. I like to socialise with my friends, and find that the company is often more important than the activity. I'm a vegetarian/pescetarian, but I am an easygoing houseguest and happy to share a kitchen with meat eaters.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

From November 2018 - early 2019 my partner Rose and I are taking a few months away from home to take some time out of traditional “work”, and think about our future and our place in the world. Couch surfing is new to us, and through it we are looking to learn, experience new things, connect with new people and participate in cultural exchange. We are friendly, open-minded, adaptable, and enthusiastic.

In our 2018/2019 winter trip we are currently planning to spend time in: Chicago, Michigan, Toronto, Montreal, and New York.

Whilst this trip will be our first experience of couch surfing, once we return home we really do hope to host as well, and pay it forward.

Music, Movies, and Books

Music: I really enjoy listening to music, especially live gigs. I enjoy a huge range of styles, and tend to listen to indie, electronic, experimental and sometimes hip hop. Some of my current favourite artists are LCD Soundsystem, Radiohead, How To Dress Well, Nils Frahm, Kendrick Lamar, Everything Everything, Solange, Bon Iver, Sampha, Jon Hopkins.

Movies: I enjoy going to the cinema or watching movies at home. Some of my favourite movies are Interstellar, Lord of the Rings trilogy, Ice Age, Grosse Point Blank. Some of my recent cinema favourites have been Dunkirk, Black Panther, Blade Runner 2049, and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.

Books: Some of my favourite fiction authors are Tolkein, Stephen King, Chris Brookmyre. Recently I've been collecting books faster than I can finish them, so I'm currently reading How Not to be a Boy by Robert Webb, Catching Thunder by Eskil Engdal and Kjetil Saeter, Nobody Real and Everything All At Once both by Steven Camden, and How Music Works by David Byrne.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

When I was 17, my best friends and I completed a 535-mile charity cycle ride across the United Kingdom. We started in the most South-Westerly point (Land’s End) and cycled Eastward to the most Easterly point (Ness Point) in our hometown. We planned the route, hostels and campsites to stay at, and raised over £1700 for the Make a Wish Foundation!

Teach, Learn, Share

I would like to learn about culture and the different experiences in the US, and I am able to highlight some of the differences in lifestyle of the united kingdom.

I am also able to share my academic knowledge of science and maths with any students if appropriate.

What I Can Share with Hosts

I am more than happy to help with cooking, cleaning, help around the house, and running errands. I hope that I can be a friend to my host(s) and share some knowledge of my home life as I experience theirs.
