About Me

Absurdophile. Outdoors and indoors enthusiast. Itinerant radical. Insatiably curious explorer of people, places, concepts, countries, roads, rivers, cuisines, cultures, stories, systems, ideas, interpretations, others, self. Ascetic hedonist. Purveyor of fine silliness. Well versed in nonsense.

Interests

Most things, really. Philosophy, writing, reading, politics. All of the natural sciences (particularly physics/mathematics), and the not-so-natural "social" ones too - economics, psychology and sociology. Basically reading anything put in front of me.
Art, particularly music and cinema.. some photography and other visual arts, and theatre (plays over musicals).

Food - growing, cooking, eating, everything. Environmental and economic sustainability.

Free and open source software, and similar philosophies.

Music, Movies, and Books

music: classical, electronic, some alternative rock, jazz, blues, ambient, African.

although, according to last.fm: Radiohead, 65daysofstatic, Nine Inch Nails, Liars, Aphex Twin, Trentemøller, TV on the Radio, Worriedaboutsatan, The War on Drugs, Mogwai, Apparat, David Bowie, Greg Haines, Amon Tobin, Grails, Gomez, Nils Frahm, The Walkmen, Godspe ed You! Black Emperor, The Cure, Arcade Fire, Damien Rice, Laura Marling, Queens of the Stone Age, Pink Floyd, Marilyn Manson, The Dandy Warhols, The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Nirvana, The John Butler Trio, Vessels, Feist, Caspian, Dawn Landes, A Perfect Circle, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, Grimes, And So I Watch You From Afar, Fink, Tanlines, Daft Punk, Jane's Addiction, Here We Go Magic, Pixies, Little People, Explosions in the Sky, Miami Horror, Do Make Say Think, Battles, ...

Movies, all over the place - many to love, many to loathe. Genre's rarely the defining factor (though it's not common for a romcom to rub me the right way). I like pretty much all of the works of Wes Anderson and PT Anderson. Woody Allen divides people tremendously and is an incredibly questionable human being, but he's produced a few of my favourite films. Traditional happy endings scare me.

books, reading, and tigers, oh my... I grew up a bibliophile, but my novel-consumption-rate has dwindled depressingly in the last year or so. If I'm travelling I can rarely resist picking up a Harper's or New Yorker; recently spellbound by The Corrections; permanent favourites in The Mandarins and the Foundation series; picking through the last pages of The Ethical Slut, which I've found alternately fascinating/inspiring and deathly obviously/dull.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Hurtling down Grouse Mountain late at night on a snowboard; flying through a white cloud at incredible speeds and emerging to a stunning panoramic vista of the city and bay of Vancouver.
