About Me
CURRENT MISSION
Recently back into travelling after a long break (last big trip was pre-2019).
Autumn in Europe catching up with family and friends, then some time in East Asia sorting life admin and visiting relatives in Hong Kong / Macau / Guangdong.
I travel slowly, like good conversations, and enjoy spending time with people who are curious about the world.
I share travel stories on Instagram (@ewenkahryu), mostly casual and unpolished.
Mostly using Couchsurfing to meet people, explore neighbourhoods, food, culture and good conversation.
I usually have my own accommodation.
Sometimes able to host depending on where I’m staying and timing.
I value meaningful cultural exchange over free accommodation logistics.
If hosting, I usually prefer 1–2 nights max — quality over quantity.
I’m often working or moving between cities, so guests should be independent and comfortable exploring on their own.
If requesting to stay, please include why you think we’d get along beyond logistics.
📍 Based around the Greater Bay Area (Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Macau, Zhuhai and Guangzhou) — usually happy to meet even if hosting isn’t possible
ABOUT ME
Open-minded, easy-going guy with broad interests and a very international background.
Ethnically Chinese, born in Macau 🇲🇴 during the Portuguese 🇵🇹 colonial era, parents from Shanghai 🇨🇳. I moved to New Zealand 🇳🇿 as a kid, grew up there, and have spent the last 5 years living and working in Australia 🇦🇺 (Melbourne). I’ve also lived in Shanghai, so I’ve got a mix of East Asian, Anglosphere and European influences.
I work as a tradie in Melbourne, but I’m also curious by nature — psychology, anthropology, culture, history, cities, language, urbanism and how people think and behave. I’m equally happy talking deeply or just sharing a meal and a laugh.
I don’t really “live” in one place anymore — I rotate between a few regions depending on season and energy.
I’m respectful of people’s space and routines, and happy to adapt to how hosts like to live.
I use Couchsurfing mainly to connect with creative, open-minded people — I’m very independent, keep my own schedule, and prefer low-expectation, easygoing interactions.
Home photos are from an older apartment — my base moves around GBA now
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
I use Couchsurfing mainly for conversation, cultural exchange, and meeting interesting people passing through.
I’m independent and appreciate guests who are the same — low-pressure, respectful, and self-sufficient.
I’m not a tour guide, but happy to share local insights or grab a coffee / meal if timing works.
I like easy, low-pressure meetups — coffee, food, walks, galleries, live music, or just conversation.
Occasionally host when possible, but best to check with me - my base moves around the Greater Bay Area.

Music, Movies, and Books
I’m big on cinema — Wong Kar-wai, Kurosawa, Coppola, Nolan, Kubrick, Wes Anderson, Studio Ghibli.
Music-wise I lean toward funk, old-school soul, indie, post-punk and alternative rock. Former bass player, so rhythm matters.
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
I once attempted to cycle over 2,000 km across Japan in under two weeks (and failed), riding through two typhoons — a great lesson in humility and endurance.
I’ve also travelled through places like Kyrgyzstan and western China, drawn by cycling, landscapes, and curiosity about culture and history. I’m more interested in experiences than ticking boxes.
Teach, Learn, Share
I like to nerd out on stuff!
