About Me

CURRENT MISSION

to live deliberately

ABOUT ME

if you'd asked me a year ago, i'd tell you that as a rule, i don't wear boots. i find them too cumbersome and too restrictive. generally you'll find me in a pair or boat shoes or slip-ons, or some other lightweight footwear. i've been known to hike barefoot, at least until i broke the fifth toe on my right foot halfway through a 14 mile hike in the mountains. my choice of footwear is rarely influenced by the weather or terrain, and that has generally served me well. sometimes it's been a point of pride, occasionally some sort of statement, but mostly it's a function of economics and habit.

lately, though, i've been wearing a pair of midweight, ankle-high hiking boots that i received as a gift. i'll wear them when it's particularly snowy, and i'll usually wear them in the mountains. if it's snowy and i'm in the mountains, you won't find me without my boots. when summer arrives, i expect i'll be back to my lightweight canvas footwear, or i might be spotted in a pair of flip-flops. but i suspect the boots have found a permanent spot in the seasonal rotation. although considerably bulkier than my vans, they're constructed of a lightweight material that still affords me a skip in my step, and though the additional padding around my foot and ankle felt oppressive at first, that cost is outweighed by my new appreciation for their dependability.

PHILOSOPHY

if you can fill the unforgiving minute
with sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
yours is the earth and everything that’s in it,
and–which is more–you’ll be a man, my son!
