About Me
CURRENT MISSION
I want to row on lots of rivers and meet lots of interesting people
ABOUT ME
When I get to a new place I like to spend the entire day walking and communing with it. I'm a reader, a ponderer, a contrarian, and generally introspective, but I'm not in a shell.
I've been to many places throughout the world, including at least a few cities in most of the countries in Western Europe, and also to western Turkey, Israel, Japan, the Southern Cone and South Korea. It really is a beautiful world, maybe you can show me more of it!
PHILOSOPHY
I am always striving to live more actively. I admire John Stuart Mill's evocation of happiness as the outcome of an active life using one's intellect and talents to better one's own and others' conditions.
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING
Surfer and (previously) host--my current place has unwilling roommates (lame!)
COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE
I've crashed on a few couches and hosted a few people. However, I've had coffee and gone out to parties with a ton of people. I've met wonderful folks in South America and in the United States through this website.
Interests
Rowing, reading, the Obama campaign (is he really our President???), intellectual history, philosophy, history of science, long walks in strange places, the woods, San Francisco, Cambridge Massachusetts, massage (professionally certified in California), university architecture, Roman history, the French language, Shakespeare and more!

Music, Movies, and Books
I love literature and am a pretentious son-of-a-gun in my list of favorites. Some are Shakespeare, Racine, Philip Roth, Voltaire, John Stuart Mill, and Plato but there are many others. Movies I have loved are Batman Begins, The Lord of the Rings, Fred Astaire's films, a lot of French cinema. I'm not a huge music buff, but I grew up listening to the "classics"--The Bruce and The Beatles come to mind
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
I think amazing is too strong a word, but when I was in Europe after college I averaged over twenty miles of walking a day for two months, and I saw so many beautiful places and met so many wonderful people.
Some of my fondest memories come from walking up mountains in Europe. Whether channeling the riders of the Tour de France on Mt. Ventoux, or hiking up the gorgeous peaks near Chamonix and Annecy, France.
Teach, Learn, Share
I love rowing and can teach how to properly use a rowing machine. Besides that, my practical knowledge is pathetically minimal!
