About Me

CURRENT MISSION

At least one international trip a year. And also traveling around Brazil everytime I get the chance.

Pelo menos uma viagem internacional por ano. E viajar pelo Brasil sempre que possível.

ABOUT ME

Always difficult to talk about ourselves, but let's try.

I think the first thing I would say is that it's really difficult to upset me. I value good sense and I try to use this as a guideline, a principle. Honesty is priceless, even when it seems to be naive, because I believe that dialogue can lead to reasonable behaviors and build solid relationships. Each day I enjoy to meet more and more people, and it's a real pleasure when I have the opportunity to meet someone "virtual" in real life.

I'm also very curious about other cultures, other habits, other ways of thinking - which I think is kind of "rule number 1" once you are here, right? There are few things in life as interesting as having contact with another perspective, another vision of the world, and we should respect that. I respect that. Sometimes I praise that, very much.

Some other pieces of information: I'm a film critic, editor of a movie magazine and academic researcher. I'm also a film curator. I study cinema (modern and contemporary, mainly). And in spite of being Brazilian, I don't like to play soccer, except in videogames (by the way: terrible on the field, occasions when a ball seems to be an alien object; however, I'm ok on videogames). Animals have always been part of my life, specially cats, so I like them.

Oh, yes, almost forgot: I'm not a heavy drinking person, but I can easily enjoy two or three beers sometimes or a bottle of wine.

PHILOSOPHY

Life is complicated, we all know that. Try to always tell the truth, even if its kind of painful, and life will become a little bit simpler.

Discover new worlds and new people - there's a lot of them (worlds and people) everywhere. To quote the amazing Anthony Bourdain: your body is not a temple, it's an amusement park. Enjoy the ride.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Despite being uncertain to offer a couch, I try to be able to show part of my city, specially when it's the case of a friend of mine (who is also a CSurfer) hosting at his place.

I know some of the best places where we can eat in my city, always for a fair or even cheap price.

Here, in the CS homepage, I participate in some groups, helping travelers , giving them tips and answering questions about countries, cities and places that I've been too, specially when it's about Brazil.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

2012 - My first experience was in 2012, in Fortaleza - CE (Brasil), and it couldn't be better; also in Fortaleza, I met a great CS girl who took me to some nice places, introduced me to her friends and made my visit to her city even more enjoyable.

2013 - Then, in September 2013, I was hosted in Cusco (Peru) for a week and a few days later I spent five CS nights in Rio de Janeiro. In December 2013 I spent three nights in Phnom Penh (Cambodia) with a friendly CSurfer from Singapore, and a few weeks later a Russian girl hosted me in Koh Samui island, in Thailand.

2014 - In February and March, I was hosted by a lovely young couple in Montevideo, Uruguay. In July 2014 a funny and gentle man hosted me for a couple of days in Santiago, Chile.

2017 - In July I was hosted by a great traveler and gentleman called Efrain, in Taxco, Mexico. I even had the opportunity to meet his lovely family.

2018 - In October I was hosted by Michael in Cape Town, South Africa. Such an interesting man, really gentle, really kind. Just talking to him late night was one of those special moments that CouchSurfing is able to do for us.

In Goiânia, my hometown, is difficult for me to host, but I try to show my city to surfers that a friend of mine hosts now and then. I know lots of places that have amazing food.

Interests

Without any doubt, my biggest interest is cinema. Films, a reason to my life. I'm a movie buffer, indeed. Cinephile from the bottom of my heart. However, I'm not that kind of cinephile who only likes to talk about films. Literature and music (Radiohead is a favorite) are also two great passions.

I also like to eat, and I love local cuisine. Food is a part of the culture that you can literally taste. A friendly bite on the country you are. Videogames are fun, but food is better.

I used to be a bigger "party going", little concerts of rock, but nowadays I prefer dinners, a cafe, spend some time with friends. Which, of course, doesn't mean that I stopped going out on parties. I like to think I've become more selective.

At last, but not less important: the desire of traveling is getting stronger each day. And that's why I'm here.

Music, Movies, and Books

Love cinema. A fan of Kubrick, Tarantino, Scorsese, Eastwood, Paul Thomas Anderson, John Carpenter, John Ford, Haneke, Dardenne, Almodóvar, James Gray, Truffaut, Murnau, Herzog, Hong Sang-soo, and many other ones.

Concerning to music, rock n' roll, pop, electronic and classical, that's for sure. Radiohead is my favorite band, but I also enjoy The Beatles, Björk, Daft Punk, Muse, David Bowie, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Prince, Joy Division, Queens of the Stone Age, Rammstein, Chico Buarque, some retrowave...

Reading, something essential in my life. Kafka, Casares, Henry James, Tolstoi, Melville, Joseph Conrad, Salinger, Woolf, Marguerite Duras, Cervantes, Thomas Mann, Andre Bazin, Philip K. Dick, Tennesse Williams... they are some friends of mine, amongst many others.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

- Travelling by myself to Thailand and Cambodia.
- Radiohead concert in Sao Paulo, in 2009;
- Climbing Waynapicchu, in Peru.
- Some days in Siem Reap, Cambodia, with great traveling friends, visiting the Angkor Wat temples and having a good time on Pub Street;
- Touching a big tiger in Chiang Mai, Thailand;
- Hug an elephant, also in Chiang Mai, Thailand;
- Sitting on a chair from eleven p.m. to midnight at the end of Phi Phi island beach (the busiest island in Thailand), just by myself, no one around, hearing the waves hitting a small hill on the right side;
- Dancing "Gangnam Style" (a song that I dislike, actually) in a Cambodian dance club, full of Cambodians, no tourists;
- Swimming surrounded by small coloured fishes while visiting some islands in Thailand;
- Climbing Villarica volcano in Pucón, Chile;
- Climbing and hiking Table Mountain for 9 hours, in Cape Town;
- Safari in Kruger Park;
- Driving the Garden Route by myself for 10 days;
- To spend the whole night, from 10 pm to 5 am, at the Malecón in Havana, talking and drinking with a Spanish friend, a Cuban middle-aged man and some Cuban musicians - such a simple night, such a great night.

Teach, Learn, Share

Well, in a travel/CS routine, which can be ephemeral, I might be able to teach something about films. I can also talk about my country, Brasil (good stuff and bad stuff, as any place in the world), teach some words in Portuguese and talk about Brazilian culture.

CS is a great way to learn about different cultures. To share a roof with locals or people who live in a city you are staying for a while or just passing by takes that travel you planned to another level. I'm interested in cultural aspects and if I learn a word of two in a different language, then that's perfect!

Hmm, what about sharing...? Food. Nothing better to share than some meals.

Here, in the CS homepage, I participate in some groups, helping travelers , giving them tips and answering questions about countries, cities and places that I've been too, specially when it's about Brazil.
