I think couchsurfing is the best way to know a place through a person who live there. They can show you the real life, no just the tourist places.
And is a cheapest way to travel as well.

Favorites books Perfume (Patrick Süskind), Animal Farm (George Orwell), Brave new world (Aldous Huxley), and some books of Isabel Allende and Eduardo Galeano.
