Don't stand around on streetcorners or crosswalks, don't stand around staring up at the buildings, don't spend any time in Times Square, anyone offering you anything for any reason is a criminal, don't go to the Bronx, do go to Brooklyn, mind your own business, talk to strangers but don't do anything past talk, get lost, have fun, never go home.
